| I just found this short interview with James Van Praagh... I hope it hasn't already been posted... SENSE AND SENSITIVITY: "My show would have come out anyway, even if 'Medium' hadn't been a hit," says James Van Praagh, laying to rest - so to speak - the idea that his upcoming CBS "The Ghost Whisperer" series, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, is a knockoff of the NBC success. "Let me tell you the real story, not the Hollywood version - the real story," he says. "I actually had a show at NBC similar to this one but not the same. We brought them a treatment, and they liked it and said, 'We'd love to do this pilot, but we have another show we're doing called 'Medium.' " The famed psychic already had a successful relationship with CBS, having produced the high-rated "Living With the Dead" miniseries starring Ted Danson, and "The Dead Will Tell" telepic with Anne Heche. It was while working on his former syndicated show "Beyond," in 2002, that Van Praagh became acquainted with paranormalist Mary Ann Winkowski, who serves as the inspiration for Hewitt's "Ghost Whisperer" character. "We asked Mary Ann about her experiences, and she had a story about a DEA agent she'd worked with before on a case." Apparently, the spirit of the agent came to her house one night and said, "Call my partner." The agent had just been killed, and he wanted his partner to know where to find the body. While that might strike most of us as an attention-grabbing tale, "The powers that be said, 'We want to make it more exciting,' " recounts Van Praagh. Eventually, they wound up with the pilot story, which centers on a soldier. That was taken from here. [ July 25, 2005, 05:26 PM: Message edited by: MCfan4eaa ] |

| I also found this little bit that mentions GW, but I don't think it deserves its own topic. "Mars orbits CBS" UPN's Veronica Mars is a favorite with critics, but it hasn't won a big audience yet, so it's time for UPN's big sister to lend a hand. Viacom's flagship network CBS will air four episodes of the drama late this summer, hopefully exposing the UPN drama to a much wider audience. Daily Variety reports CBS will run two hours of Veronica on July 29, and two more episodes will air on Friday nights in August. Since that's the end of the summer, CBS has little to lose by running Veronica in the spot where they'll put Ghost Whisperer in the fall, and it could potentially turn out to be a big boost for Veronica Mars…generating interest in UPN's second season premiere in September. Taken from here. |

| And here is a little quote from a producer of GW. Taken from here. Last year, NBC had a young woman seeing dead people in "Medium"; now CBS will do the same with "The Ghost Whisperer." That's logical, said Kim Moses, a producer of the latter. One poll showed that 52 percent of people 18 to 29 believe in ghosts but only 25 percent of 65-year-olds do; "Ghost Whisperer" will chase away the old and keep the young. "It's a perfect thing for CBS," she said, "because they want to bring down the demographics." |

| ronald33, I don't know... GW and TOYL are completely different shows. I think one of the main reasons for TOYL's failure was because it was a spin-off... On the other hand, in 1999 it was easier for a show to make it. Networks cancel shows SO quickly now... I just hope GW is a hit from the beginning!
