| Ok I've been talking about this for a few days now and here it is! First, I'll go over the bitTorrent stuff as some of you may not be familiar with this technology. The only software you'll need to grab the file from the link below is called the bitTorrent client. The latest version is available from bitTorrent's site in the download section. The Windows Installer package is the easiest way to go. It'll do all the necessary setup for you. From there, you should be able to save the torrent. The way bitTorrent works is pretty simple. It's a decentralized peer to peer sharing method in which all the users downloading a specific file (refered to as a torrent) are also sharing it to everyone else. This means the more seeders you have for a torrent, the faster the file will spread. A seeder being a person with a complete file actively running the bitTorrent client. Clients find each other through the help of a tracker. I won't go through all the technical details, let's just say that it's a program somewhere on a server that acts as a central hub. This is something the torrent creator has taken care of as the tracker is already hardcoded in his file. Just know that if the tracker is down, nobody will be able to download or share the file. *** The message similar to "bad data from the tracker" only means that the tracker could be overused. Keep your window opened, it will eventually start downloading. The torrent file linked below is not the actual file you are trying to download. It contains only the necessary information to get the real file and to verify it was acquired without errors (this insures us that nobody is sharing corrupted data). Once you click on a torrent, you can either save the file somewhere on your computer and then run it with the client by double-clicking it OR you can choose to run it straight from your browser. I will simply ignore the advanced command line options, just be aware they exist if you want to look into it. The bitTorrent client should start and it will ask you where you wish to save the REAL file. Simply select a folder and voila! At first, you'll see something like "connecting to peers" but within a minute or so your download should start. If there is a problem with the tracker, you may also get a message similar to "failed to connect to tracker". Even though the standard bitTorrent client is uh... well... pretty standard, I gives you the basic information you need to know about your file. The major difference between the bitTorrent window and the usual download window from your browser, it that bitTorrent gives you upload statistics. This way you know exactly how much you are sharing with peers (and how fast). I don't know what the norm is, but I usual feel good if I at least give back what I've taken. Giving back twice is even better! Bacisally, this means you should keep the bitTorrent window opened even when you are done with the download until the numbers next to "uploaded" and "download" are balanced. Remember that bitTorrent supports resuming. This means you can start downloading a file then stop, only to complete the download later. This also means you can reopen the torrent on a complete download to share the file to peers at any time. This is how a person becomes a seeder. I guess this is not a bad start. If somebody thinks I have forgotten a detail, feel free to help out. I don't mind answering any questions on the topic. I'll do my best to share my knowledge. On now to the real meat! Here's the second episode of American Dreams featuring Love. The clip is about two and a half minutes long and weighs 25.7MB. I am only able to push this at about 22.5KB/s. It will be slow at first but as more people join, the speed should get better. I sure hope this will prove to be a successful test. If this doesn't eat to much of my upload limit (remember I'm limited to 5GB/month by my ISP), I will surely share more videos! So keep those bitTorrent windows opened View the torrent: http://www.torrentz.com/torrents/view_4042 Download the torrent: http://www.torrentz.com/torrents/download_4042 PS: It's almost 4am here on the east coast so I'm about to go to bed. I'll leave my computer running but if something goes wrong, I won't be able to fix it until tomorrow [ February 21, 2004, 04:40 AM: Message edited by: AlexM1dn1ght ] |

| It seems to have worked great but I'd like to get more feedback on this. I've uploaded more than 580MB and it seems the file has more than 10 seeders at any given time. I'm just not sure how many people from this board where able to get the file. If you did, please post in this thread and share you experience with us. If I find out people are pleased with it, i'll probably post a larger file... maybe the Ryan Seacrest show? :D |

Also, I'd like to mention that I'm very happy with the whole experience! Almost 18 hours after I created the torrent, there are still 8 seeders for 2 downloaders. Cheers to everyone who helped me on this | |
