| I totally understand the mods for not hosting large files because they use so much bandwidth. One solution that could solve our problem, would be to setup a bitTorrent tracker on a fanhost server (one time deal) and let users upload torrent files (30-40KB) so we could start sharing the videos and other large files. This would use minimal bandwidth on the fanhost server (not more than a small size image) and is especially a great solution for leechers as bitTorrent forces you to share the file with peers who are connected to the same torrent. For more info (and a way better explanation of the process), check out the bitTorrent website. I have used bitTorrent for a while now and it has proven to be the easiest way to get large files (>500MB). In fact, it's way better than most P2P sharing programs with all their viruses, spyware and incomplete/corrupted files. just my 2¢ |

Otherwise it will likely go completely unchecked. These are just simple message boards. I've never seen any other Fanhost boards (or any message boards for that matter) offering free videos to download, ever. We all became spoiled with the video posters/hosters who have recently bowed out. I don't have much knowledge of these things but I doubt these boards will support any downloading. It costs money. No one has the money to burn. Also, we probably have frustration felt by posters who feel their videos or images are being pirated or resold. There's no way around that. It's the web and there is no way to truly police these thieves. If you post something on the net you may as well accept that it may be used in ways you don't desire. Sure, posters may have worked hard at creating their video or image files. But that doesn't give them ownership. You can't alter copyright. None of us own the rights to any of these items. Very little reason to get too upset over something you have no rights to in the first place. The classic "stuck between a rock and a hard place". | With the bitTorrent solution the large file itself is never uploaded onto the fanhost server. The file is shared from peer to peer. Fanhost is merely the facilitator by hosting very small torrent files and running one unique tracker. I personally don't care much about the people who resell my clips. I'm not the owner of the original copyrighted material and it's not my job to enforce the law. My goal is not to change this board, I've only been around for over a month and the mods have been running a great site for years. I'm simply offering a solution and the decision is up to them. |

Only the copyright owners could muster that power. I was merely suggesting possible problems with the previous posters. Myself included. Change can be good. No harm attempting your idea at all. Just make sure and voice it at the proper board too. Mods don't have much say on this type of topic. It needs to be read by those who actually operate Fanhost. | Phil First of all, when you say posters/hosters why don't you use the real names. Besides jlh4ever, aries03 and myself, nobody has posted a vid on this board since 9/02. And the only person to host was Sparky, period. Secondly, although the airwaves are free and the content copyrighted, don't forget that cappers spend money on equipment and take the time and effort to record these programs. I spent over $300 for the software/hardware I use to capture. You can be damn sure I feel ownership of ANY mpeg that I create. Thats my work, I took the time to record and encode. Thats why I tag ALL my captures, let them sell it, I could care less, but that "Don4JLH" will always be there. Third, I have noticed on more than one occasion you speculating on why I left this board. To set it straight, I have joined a small JLH vid trading circle, mostly cappers that share their JLH vids. I decided that my services were better spent there than here, since I have gotten more in one month there than I ever got here. Thats why I left, not because I did not want ppl selling my vids, and not because some idiot questioned my methods. |

I didn't feel comfortable using anyone's names. Especially since those names mentioned were leaving or had left. To what end would this serve? I always tried to thank you and any of the posters and hosters here. That's where I plainly and kindly stated them in the past. We had even spoken through PM's in the past. I mean no harm. I KNOW YOU KNOW THIS. Yes the posters and hosters were primarily you and Sparky. Let me make that clear once again. Don and Sparky were certainly the primary posters and hosters for the videos here. I didn't mean to cause anger over that at all. I'm glad you let people know where you stand Don. It's a great idea to join a vid club. There are many ways to collect. I wish you the best. If you feel your services are better spent than that's fine too. After all this is primarily a message board. I, for one, would like to see you still post (not a video - that's not necessary) and not just be a "service" to anyone. I'm also not trying to say your offerings were anything less than phenomenal. They were and are some of the best fun seen here for sure. I have most of these footages but had never bothered getting software to place them on computer. As you well know I'm not computer savvy at all. I'm one of those old school VHS (yes and even Beta) and now DVD recording people. I love these DVD recorders and I've started to archive some of the footage now. I have hundreds of hours to wade through. I'm not only a Love collector but also collect several music acts and tons of TV shows. As you know it matters not how much you or I or anyone spends on their equipment or collection. It doesn't give us actual ownership. This is NOT intended to anger you. Simply look at EBAY. The owners and their "EBAY police lackeys" constantly police and remove copyright infringing materials each and every day. The market used to be much easier there in the past. Not so now. Yet, luckily, over the years I gathered up some very rare items there. EBAY is willing to lend a hand when you have actual ownership but it's a thin line. It can get quite expensive to copyright. I'm not trying to say you are in the wrong. Hell, quite the opposite. I own hundreds of videos of Love and most are not seen here or anywhere. I've traded and sold my videos hundreds of times. Well at least tens of times, hehe. Absolutely nothing wrong with tagging. As for videos, we went through a very similar discussion here many months ago as I recall. Specifically someone (other than you or Sparky etc) posted one of your videos right here at this board. Next thing there were some unhappy remarks that the file name had been changed. This is the type of thing I'm talking about. People who pirate have absolutely no qualms with changing a file name. I believe the person might have even confessed to altering the title? But it got a bit heated here over that change. People who pirate have absolutely no problem stealing, changing, altering and downright claiming ownership, etc etc. I hope you see where I'm headed here. Your frustration is quite plain. As is mine. And I can completely relate in a very big way. I'm a photographer and I have had to deal with a few pirates in my day. They just steal an image I personally shot, digitally reprint, and sell it as "taken from my own negative". Talk about getting p!ssed! It's never fun and there's so little you can do short of hiring a lawyer or a hitman. If you feel I'm an idiot questioning your methods then you miss my point entirely. I'm not sure if this is hostility. Maybe it's not hostility at all? As with me I bet it's frustration. I apologize if you feel I'm specifically attacking you or your ways. I'm actually speaking from my own ownership matters. You probably notice me whining about the lurkers more than any others. You had been around quite a while now. I'm sure you remember me whining about a seller on Yahoo selling a Love picture CD and called it the "i love love" collection. It had my scans as the selling point no less. I "feel" ownership too but in reality it's not ownership at all. What are you going to do eh? They are vultures and they are everywhere. Another example. Have you noticed the first few shots up at EBAY for Love's red dress at the Grammys? Almost every one of them are digital scans taken from here and other scan sites. Guarantee the actual photographers will not see a dime from these sellers. They were placed on EBAY for the quick three-day auctions to beat any of the legitimate photo sellers. One of these shots just sold for $122. An 8x10. Just one damn 8x10. In my frustration I want to scream out the names of these pirates at EBAY but to what ends? They are here to stay. Again sorry if I somehow upset you even more. I'll refrain from any other speculations. I was honestly venting my own frustrations as well. Sorry if any of mine were/are projected as yours in any way. Take care dude. |

| I'm still a newbie on this board, thus I am not fully aware of the whole history behind the current situation. What I can tell though is that in less than a month, I was approached by a few people who simply wanted me to upload my videos but clearly were not interested in sharing them to this board. Some even asked me if they could directly download them from me. I guest this gives me a glimpse at what posters/hosters like Don and the others named previously had to go through. That's why I like the bitTorrent solution: No centralized host, everybody must participate in the sharing of a file to get it. So this solves the hosting (and guilt) problem. As for the @$$holes who leech purely for profit (and don't even give a rat's ass about the artists), well... there is no easy solution. I like to believe that the universe is balanced and these jerks will all die in painful accidents for abusing the good will of a few individuals I make caps and share them because I know the fans out there will appreciate it. I hope that my aversion for resellers will not outgrow my love for spreading the greatness of JLH, at least not until I grow old and tired. |
