That was the joyous assault that greeted Hilary Duff at her first area concert at the Meadowlands last night. From the moment the 16-year-old Kewpie-doll-of-a-star bounced onto the stage, until she stopped chirping 70 minutes later, the screeches and yelps came in steady, escalating waves. How could it have been any different, given the magnitude of what was happening onstage? No other star today is tapping so cannily into the hopes and dreams of the subteen set than Duff. She's not blessed with great singing talent, but Duff embodies a wholesome character that has beguiled the millions of young fans forsaken by the previous generation of teen stars who ache to play for grownups. It's small wonder Duff's tour is one of the few financially sound shows touring this summer. Last night's show was a sellout, as is tonight's at Nassau Coliseum. At the Meadowlands, the kids and their parents didn't have to worry about anything remotely sexy - a la Britney and Christina's bumps and grinds - taking place onstage. The concert was every bit as chaste as you'd expect from a star who has eagerly sold herself as teen pop's designated goody-goody. Not only did Duff refrain from dancing in suggestive ways, she hardly danced at all. Instead, she stuck mainly to singing songs from her morbidly formulaic, triple platinum debut CD, "Metamorphesis." Duff opened with a new song, "Girl Can Rock." And even though she can't, she did display a cotton candy voice that appeals to the sweetest of fans. The songs she performed were as sugary as 10 bowls of Fruity Pebbles, despite their attempts at faux rock riffs and Duff's stabs at spunky self-assertion. As a vocalist, Duff didn't display a great deal of character, but she hit the notes. And for right now, she's filling out her limited role well enough. She's this generation's Sandra Dee. Doesn't every era need one? http://www.nydailynews.com/front/sto...p-185810c.html |
