With the recent skankification of former good girls Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and Christina Aguilera, only Duff still ranks as the celebrity teen girls can admire with their mothers' approval. The oh-so-sweet 17-year old's rise to the top of the box office and pop charts began with her star turn on Disney TV comedy Lizzie McGuire (Spears, Simpson and Aguilera also started out on Disney TV shows). Fame and further fortune followed. Over the past two years, Duff has released two albums, starred in five movies and launched her own clothing and cosmetics line. She hasn't bared any skin in a men's magazine -- yet -- but there are some blemishes in Duff's world. She and fellow teen star Lindsay Lohan have been involved in a lengthy public feud since both dated washed-up teen popster Aaron Carter. And Avril Lavigne lashed out at Duff in a Newsweek magazine article last year, calling her a "mommy's girl," after Duff allegedly slagged Lavigne for allegedly slagging her fans. Sheesh. For the uninitiated who wonder how Duff got to where she's at -- and managed to sell out this Monday's concert at the MTS Centre in less than 15 minutes -- here's a primer on Duff's not-so-tough life. THE EARLY YEARS The Houston, Tex., native started her career as a six-year old, dancing in a touring production of the Nutcracker with her older sister Haylie. Following a role in a TV commercial, the young Duff decided acting was where it was at, so her mom Susan made like Jed Clampett and kin and moved to Hollywood, leaving her husband behind to run a chain of family-owned convenience stores. In Tinseltown, Susan got young Hilary a variety of roles in made-for-TV movies True Women, Casper Meets Wendy and The Soul Collector. Then Disney came calling. Duff was cast as the gawky title character in Lizzie McGuire in 2001. The show, chronicling McGuire's ups and downs at school and home, was a huge success among the pre-teen set and made Duff a legit star. It ran for three seasons before Duff called it quits. MOVIN' ON UP She got her first big movie break in 2003 opposite Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz in Agent Cody Banks before reprising her TV role in The Lizzie McGuire Movie. The plot has McGuire being mistaken for a famous pop star during a class trip to Italy. Much Hilary hilarity ensues. Duff ended the year starring opposite Steve Martin in Cheaper by the Dozen. Useless trivia alert: Duff made $35,000 per episode for playing McGuire on television. She made $1 million for playing her in the movie. Last year, her salary increased to $2 million per film when she played lead roles in A Cinderella Story and Raise Your Voice. The latter featured Duff as an aspiring singer at a music school. Which brings us to.... HITTING THE NOTE While making her TV show, Duff spent time in the studio recording songs for the show's soundtrack and The Santa Clause 2 soundtrack. She recorded a Christmas album and tracks for the Lizzie McGuire Movie soundtrack before deciding it was time to record an album of her own. She hooked up with some of the industry's top writers and producers, including The Matrix, on her 2003 CD Metamorphosis, which hit No. 2 during its first week of release. It featured typical teen topics -- boys, personal empowerment and puberty. Sample lyrics from the title track: "Things are different now when I walk by / You start to sweat and you don't know why / It gets me nervous but it makes me calm / To see life all around me moving on." Her self-titled sophomore effort was released last year and shot straight to No. 1 in Canada and the U.S. Duff gets co-writing credits on four of the 17 tracks. DUFF LOVE If seeing Duff just about everywhere isn't enough, now fans can look like Duff, smell like Duff and do their hair like her too! Like ohmygawd! Stuff by Hilary Duff is a line of clothing, cosmetics and accessories aimed at the 'tween and teen market. It's available at Zellers in Canada and Target in the U.S. But don't inhale when giving foot treatments with the Twinkle Toes Pedicure Set. Washington-based U.S. Public Interest Research Group recently warned the nail polish in the kit contains the potentially toxic chemical xylene, which can cause dizziness, confusion, difficulty breathing and irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat. Many of the same symptoms will probably be experienced by more than 12,000 Duff fans when she plays MTS Centre Monday. HILARY DUFF Mon., 7 p.m. @ MTS Centre.
