| Hilary Duff, the talented US teenager singer NW catches up for a quick chat with singer, Hilary Duff. You started off as a ballet dancer, then became an actress and now you’re a musician as well … I think that it was, like, my sister (Hailey) wanted to do those things so I wanted to do them as well. After ballet I was actually a gymnast and my sister was like, “I want to be an actress.” I was like, “What? That’s stupid!” I thought I was tougher than that, I think. But she started doing it and it was so much fun I wanted to do it too. You’ve been in the entertainment industry since you were a child. Did you find it difficult growing up in the public eye? Sometimes. I feel very normal. But people can be very judgemental. Now I'm better because I'm a little bit older so I laugh it (public criticism) off and don't really pay attention to it. I have an incredibly supportive family and we're very close and normal and people don't like to see that. When on tour you’re constantly around a lot of older people and not really anyone your own age. Do you get lonely? I was. I was, like, “I'm 16 hanging out with all these 40-year olds”. But my best friend travels with me now and that makes it easier. And friends fly over and visit me wherever I am. But it does get hard. Even my friend that travels with me, she’s my best friend, she understands and she really likes being on the road with me. But it's not that same as seeing all your friends or going to your favourite place so that part definitely gets hard. You must have had to grow up quite quickly. Do you find you notice a difference between you and other people your own age? Definitely. There's been times when I go, I think it sounds kind of bad to say, but I'll go back to Texas (where I’m from) and hang out with some of my friends and I'll be, like, “What are these people doing?” I feel just a little bit older, a little bit more mature than them. But when I’m with my friends in LA, even though they’re a little bit older than me, I’m like a total goofball. I definitely act my age. Have you made friends with any of your peers in the entertainment industry, like Mandy Moore and the Olsens? I have and I haven’t. So much of it is very fake to me. I don't go out to parties – seriously if there's a Teen Vogue party on or a bunch of my friends hanging out in my friend's apartment and I've got the night off, I'm going to go to my friend's apartment. I work so much and I'd rather not go some place where people are going to look me up and down and see what kinds of shoes I'm wearing. I'm not into that. That's why I don't have that many friends who are in the business. But I have a couple of friends that are in bands that I've toured with. And the Olsen twins are very nice girls but I don't, like, call them up and say let's hang out. But when we see each other we're really friendly. Same with Mandy Moore. We did Rove Live together and she's a really nice girl. I have many friendly acquaintances, but just not best friends. You’ve probably heard about Ashlee Simpsons’ lip syncing debacle on Saturday Night Live. Have you ever feel pressured to do that yourself? I've definitely felt pressure, but the band and me are all live so I feel really comfortable about that, that that could never happen to me. But I have felt pressure before because in Europe they want you to lip sync on their TV shows and it's really hard to stand your ground because there it's so normal. Like in Paris people do it all the time. I'm actually friends with Ashlee and people are giving her such a hard time but, I don't know, I just think it sucks. Do you think lip syncing makes sense sometimes, for example for people like Madonna and Britney who dance a lot during their shows? That’s what so many people are saying. When everyone was giving Britney Spears all that flack for lip syncing I just think look at how she works her butt off on stage. You can't possibly do that and possibly sing at the same time. There are times when I'm on stage and I run around a lot and I don't dance but my show is definitely filled with a lot of energy and I'm jumping up and down and going crazy and there are times when I have trouble singing and I have to just stand there for a second. I think there are always two sides and (Ashlee) could have been sick or something. You’ve said that you can understand Mary Kate’s battle with anorexia because of the pressure on young women, especially in the industry that you’re in. Do you worry about your weight and your clothes and your looks? Of course I do. Even if I wasn't in this job I would still worry about it. I'm a normal girl. But I think I've learned to try and pay too much attention to it. A lot has been written about you and Lindsay Lohan feuding. Is the song, Haters, really about her? They're just rumours. I would never write a song about her. I don't know her. This whole thing is like so blown out of proportion. I honestly don't know her. Of course I've met her before, but I don't know her and I’m kind of done with it. Avril Lavigne called you a ‘mommy’s girl’ and you said she should have more respect for her fans. What was going on there? I did say that about Avril Lavigne. I probably shouldn't have because I get really sick of people talking about me and saying stuff. She did say that about me and a couple of other things but I don't care about what she thinks I am or if she doesn't like my image or whatever. I’m a really big fan of hers. I have both her CDs and I love her music and I think she's really talented. I have nothing else to say, I don't know her either. You have quite a wholesome image – some people say you are like a young Britney Spears. Can you see yourself developing a “sexy” image later down the track? I'm doing what I feel comfortable with. I mean, I love Britney Spears and I think she's really cool, and if she feels comfortable doing what she's doing and the way she dresses or whatever then more power to her. But I don't feel comfortable doing that. I don't think it necessarily shows a sign of maturity to take your clothes off. I think people grow up and mature in different ways. Do you find it difficult to form committed relationships with guys when you have such a busy life? It gets really hard. I mean I don't go to regular school and it's hard to date someone in the business. It's definitely very hard. What do you look for in a guy? I don't have a certain type. I'm very open minded about the way people look or whatever. I like someone very funny. I like to laugh a lot and have a good time. I definitely don't like lazy people. I like people who are motivated and want to go out and have fun and do stuff. Someone who relates to me and someone who is very open minded too. Do you have a celebrity crush? He's too old for me and he's married, but I'm a big David Beckham fan. |

At first she says she doesn't have any celebrty friends and she says she's friends with Ashlee. This article seems fishy. I don't really think that those were her exact words. I think they twisted them. I mean Hilary is not that stupid to say that she doesn't lipsync and stuff, because she does. Maybe she sung live once or twice on a TV show, but even in those occasions she used a backingtrack. |
