Brad Penny - not the brightest bulb in the box

This isnt really Eliza news so I didnt think it warranted a news item, but made me laugh none the less...

Sometimes you hear stories that just kind of confirm why ballplayers are playing ball and not breaking down Shakespeare's iambic pentameter. And for you pessimists out there who simply think ballplayers are meatheads, then this will certainly confirm your stereotype. From Tony Jackson's Inside MLB Dodgers blog

A well-known Los Angeles radio personality was interviewing Brad Penny after Penny left yesterday's game with the New York Mets. The final question was this: "I know you spent some time this winter traveling around Europe. What was your favorite place?" Penny's answer: "Cabo."

In case you who were wondering, Penny signed to play pro ball straight out of high school, so maybe they never got to geography while he was in school. But I guess the moral of the story is...when you can throw 95+ MPH, and you're reportedly hooking up with Eliza Dushku and Alyssa Milano, nothing else matters.

For those who don't know, Cabo is in Mexico... which isn't actually in Europe last time we checked Mr Penny...

Phew! That's a relief, Andrew. Just witness our major league baseball steroid scandals. I used to enjoy watching a New York Yankee game, but now...it's lost all its charm. Too many big name overpaid jocks enhancing their performances with poisons to their body. Guys like Hank Aaron and Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams never did that junk, they played the game because they loved it. They're the ones who deserve to be in Hall of Fame at Cooperstown NY, not a-holes like Barry Bond.

A lot of US cities have minor league teams that get great attendance by local fans. They play baseball the right way and their fans are loyal. Get rid of the major leagues, and get back to the grassroots. I'll step off of my soapbox now...

As for Brad Penny, he's like many major league players, recruited right out of high school (if they passed at all). I'll give him credit, he may not be as bright as we'd like him to be, but he is good at his job and apparently, he's making Eliza happy so I guess that's all we can hope for.

^ don't worry about it. I've heard about the scandal over the baseball there. It's a reall pity that it went to that, but it shows how much sport has changed over the years. It's now 'win at all costs' with some people.

Though Brad's a bit daft, the main thing is Eliza's happy with him and that's all that matters. (lucky fella).

Dodgers Pitcher/Horse Racing Fan

ROOTS As a kid in Oklahoma, I loved riding horses. After my dad took me to the track, I got hooked on racing. The adrenaline rush when your horse goes into the gate is amazing. I would go to the track when I played for Florida, and I started buying race horses when I signed with LA.

HIGHEST HIGH My first horse raced at Hollywood Park in 2005. We were playing at Kansas City so I couldn't watch, but my trainer called to tell me we won. My first race ever and the horse wins? That's pretty cool.

LOWEST LOW I won a bunch of money off Barbaro, but his getting hurt took away any satisfaction. He was on his way to winning a Triple Crown. To see him break his ankle was awful.

OBSESSION I'm a partner in five horses in LA and five in Oklahoma. I get more nervous following my horses than I do when I'm pitching. But my favorite thing is just being around them and petting them. It's like being back in Oklahoma.
