Default Faith features in Season 8 Buffy comics

Not really Eliza news per se, but of interest to Faith fans..

Next month sees the release of the much anticipated season 8 story arc Joss Whedon Buffy comics, and the character of Faith takes centre stage in the second half of the 'season'.

If the cover artwork and first five pages are anything to go by this is going to be amazing.

"The second story in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," which is penned by writer Brian K Vaughan, puts the spotlight on a character who began as an ally of Buffy and the Scoobies, then fought against them, and by the TV series end was fighting along side them again - Faith the Vampire Slayer. "When Brian and I sat down, it was more like doing the show in terms of 'what do we learn about faith?" Whedon said. "Why is she different at the end of this than she was at the beginning? What are we saying about her? What are we saying about Buffy?' It was like breaking the show." "

I'm very much looking forward to this series from Dark Horse.

From what I've read in various reviews, and in interviews with Joss Whedon, this is going to be really a virtual Season 8, with all the relationships and dialogue between the characters. Each issue will be like an episode, telling one story and building a larger story for the entire season. And I am really curious to see what part Faith plays, good or bad. I'm thinking that after her epiphany on "Angel", she'll tend toward the good but will always have that lone-wolf demeanor that makes it difficult for her to be a Slayer-team player.

I just know that I will like boycott Buffy if they have Faith with Wood. Ugh, WORST PAIRING EVER! And so very out of character, too. Like seriously Joss, what were you thinking? She better have dumped him.

I don't know Aph, I always thought the Faith-Wood pairing was more of a "we're probably gonna die, so live for the moment" kind of relationship, kinda reminds me of "enemies" Cordelia and Xander passionately making out during a seriously dangerous moment.

Faith was always flirting with the bad boys, she was also making moves toward Spike at about the same time. Always thought Joss always loved to tease his audience with possible pairings. I still liked Faith's remark to Wood,
"No way you're prettier than me," and her genuine concern about his wounds on the schoolbus after the final battle.

I didn't have a problem with random sex. What I had a problem with was the hint that they might end up in a relationship when they had just freakin' met. I just don't think Faith would consider a relationship with ANYONE straight after leaving prison, let alone some random guy she just met. I hated her concern for him at the end there, it was very unFaithlike for her to be so enamored with someone she had just met just because he tried to pressure her into being with him. Even allowing him a chance to hook up with her again seemed very out of character. The REAL Faith would have told him to get lost! She's supposed to be the get some, get gone girl, not the get some and stick around girl. Unless it's with Buffy and then it's perfectly acceptable for her to get in a relationship, haha.

So yeah, I'm worried that they're going to have her with Wood still. I would rather her not appear in the comics at all than to watch her get butchered like she did in Season 7.

I quite liked her being with Wood - or at least, I'd rather have her not with someone but if she had to be then Wood was a good choice - it was just a way of showing growth away from what she used to be I guess. But I can see why some would dislike it. Basically, I'm down the middle - I liked it for Season 7 but I don't really want it for this Season 8 comic.

Speaking of the Season 8 comic lol - I read about this a few days agao and I am so stoked about it! I have recently got right back into Buffy and Angel, big time, and a Season 8, in any form, sounds supreme to me. Roll on March (near my birthday too lol :D).

I browsed the first five pages over on Dark Horse website - looks good but kinda bizarrely different at the same time - a few clever little notes in there though.

TYG & Aph, I left out something in my earlier post.

I wanted to say that it's my opinion Faith changed a lot after her epiphany on Angel in Season 1's "Five by Five" and "Sanctuary", her imprisonment and her redemption as a hero in Season 4's "Salvage", "Release" and "Orpheus" which directly proceeded her Season 7 Buffy appearances.

When Buffy was "voted out" by the Potentials, Faith became a leader by default and learned how difficult it was to be in command. She became more conscious of what her actions could do, and having been a loner all her life, she needed support, even if it was just a quickie with Principal Wood. As TYG indicated, her character growth showed she had come to feel for him, when in the past, as you said, she would have dumped him.

In "Chosen", I think that she was more concerned that Wood's wounds weren't life-threatening, and she was relieved and happy when he played the "dead" prank on her. I don't really think she would have continued the relationship beyond making sure he got medical aid.

I'll go along with TYG on having Faith relation-free for the Season 8 comic. Unless, of course, its with you, Aph

Very well said - I'll go along with that. I think that she did change and that the relationship would have been better if it had been given more than 5 episodes to develop - but I give them some credit for what they tried to do there.

(Ah "Five by five" - best Angel episode ever lol. Iplan on watching that and "Sanctuary" tonight as I just got the dvds this week - not that I didn't have it on video before anyway lol)

I know! To this day, her performance in that alleyway is the best I have seen. It gets me every single time. But sadly Buffy and Angel were never lucky with Emmys. :(

Faith DID change, but just a few episodes before she decided to give Wood a chance, she was talking about hooking up with guys with bull whips and practically humping Spike, so uh, I don't think she was exactly relationship material yet. Especially with Wood! Hell, even Xander would have been better than Wood. Ugh. The ONLY reason they hooked her up with Wood was because the only other single guys on the show were Giles and Andrew and that's another thing that pisses me off. It was just like, "Let's put Faith with this guy because Andrew's obviously gay and Giles is too old, we have to do Spuffy, and Xander and Anya still have feelings." It just pisses me off to no end. I don't give the writers ANY credit for that because it was all a matter of convenience, not actual character compatibility or something well thought out.

If they wanted to show Faith looking for support from someone, they should have tried to resolve some of the issues she had with the characters already involved in her life from season 3. I was really disappointed that they didn't really show anything with Faith and other characters working out their previous problems. I would have loved to see Faith and Willow talking about going bad, and Buffy and Faith discussing the past and how much they had hurt each other.

Good points, Aph. I agree, there should have been more on the dynamics between Faith/Buffy. I just think the writers were somewhat constrained by the larger Big Bad storyline and the short time left until the end of the series to explore the points you brought up. I think Buffy's short fight with Faith when she first comes back, and another later after taking the Potentials to the Bronze were the writers hints that there was still a lot of tension between the two. Yet, when Buffy is wounded in "Chosen", she hands the Scythe to Faith in a "passing of the torch" - in that moment they truly became sisters of Slayers.

What I really enjoy here on this topic is how easily we all reawakened our emotions for a show that has now been off for nearly four years.

Loved or hated what the writers did, what is most important is how the prospect of a Season 8, albeit in comic form, has reminded us of how deeply we felt about the characters in "Buffy" and "Angel".

I'll always have strong feelings about Faith and the show in general! I STILL read Fuffy and Fesley fan fiction. I've actually run out of fan fiction because I've pretty much managed to read every story of every Faith pairing I like, and there are a lot! So now I'm just reading things over again, lol. It's so sad.

Now this certainly isn't the biggest news update ever lol but thought it was worth mentioning.

Apparently, from what I can discern of the sentence, the issue will focus on Faith AND Giles.

Buffy Season 8 will continue with an arc by Brian K. Vaughan with art by Georges Jeanty. The story focuses on Faith and Giles.

http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6419421.html

Just thought I'd throw it in there since I hadn't heard about it or expected those two characters to be together in the story - I don't mean together in the sense of.....oh you know what I mean - just that I wouldn't expect her to be alongisde Giles out of all the Scoobies perhaps lol. So I guess maybe she didn't totally go off alone after Season 7 finale. Perhaps we'll get to see another classic drunk Giles reaction to a female Scooby "coming out" lol.

Here's another note about the upcoming series (release pushed back to 3/14)

"Buffy Season 8" Comic Book - What's new with Buffy ?

….Last I heard from Brian Vaughan, he was deep into his first issue (that’d be #6, for those without a scorecard), and pushing up against the page count of twenty-two—this Faith story he’s working on promises to be packed tight. Working with Joss on Buffy is pretty damn exciting, but getting to work with Brian for the first time smells like napalm in the morning. Like victory…."
