Just read this about the movie's soundtrack, written by the composer, Mark Adler.

Quote:
I've just finished co-composing the score for NOBEL SON with producer and re-mix artist Paul Oakenfold. The result of our collaboration is an edgy track combining techno/electronica grooves and agitato strings. Alan Rickman plays researcher Eli, who wins the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His trip to Stockholm with wife Sarah (Mary Steenburgen) is cut short when his son Barkley (Bryan Greenburg) is kidnapped and held for ransom by Thaddeus (Shawn Hatosy). Thaddeus reveals himself to be Eli's illegitimate son, who now wants to displace Barkley as Eli's "genuine" son. The two brothers start a fight that involves not only money but also Barkley's girlfriend, City Hall (Eliza Dushku). Danny Devito plays an eccentric neighbor and Bill Pullman is the detective trying to get to the bottom of it all. This is my fourth collaboration with director Randall Miller, who co-wrote the script with his wife Jody Savin. Watch for a theatrical release this fall.
Paul Oakenfold hey? And good to see something finally about the release date Not long to wait now!

Thanks Keri!

I wonder if that means the film is going on general release this fall? I didnt think it even had a distributor yet...

Edited to add: I only just noticed that Lindy Booth (from Wrong Turn) is also in Nobel Son...

It sounds that way doesn't it? If it premieres at Toronto and then gets theatrical release in the USA straight after I wonder if / when we might see a cinema release in the UK?

would the release be limited or would it be in almost every theatre in the US (as well as the UK....if it were to be released in theatres soon)? cuz i live in a pretty crummy place and we dont really get indie films or films that arent a blockbuster here

I was wondering that too. It's hard to judge with this film isn't it? Hopefully we won't have long to wait long to see now though

I do hope that it's not a limited release. As I'm never sure if my cinema will show it if it is a limited release

If a distributitor had picked up Nobel Son, there would have been something in one of the trades about it.

For any movie to have a wide release (meaning over 2000 theaters, so it would be in most US towns) it has to be released by a major distributor (Sony, Fox, Paramount, etc). A few smaller films have done well major distrubution (Passion of the Christ, for example), but it rarely happens.

The amount of money to distrubute a film wide is astronomic. Prints alone for a 3,000 film release would probably be more than the entire production budget of Nobel Son. Advertising budgets for any movie with wide release usually cost at least $10M now. So, that's why you don't see small films that have limited appeal get wide releases.

All of the major studios have their fall schedules set. They're working on tweaking summer 2007 right now and setting their fall 2007 schedules. If Nobel Son was coming out any time soon, it would be on a release schedule by now and some site like BoxOfficeMojo.com would know about it.

And the scary thing is that Noble Son is probably the biggest film Eliza is attached to at the moment.

Why is that scary Matt? I'd rather see Eliza in small intelligent projects than big budget crap any day of the week, even if it does mean I have to wait for DVD.

The place I work at has just joined the Digital Screens Network, so more smaller films will be more available to more screens on release. Isn't there a similar thing happening in the US Faith_Fan? We've seen it said twice in print now I believe that it should have a fall release, so I'm remaining positive for now

But Eliza isn't even in the position to do big budget crap, really I'm all for smaller quality roles but you want career progression too. If her name isn't out there, soon she won't even be offered good independent roles, then it'll be average indies flicks and that cycle will go on and on. Unless she does something bigger.

P.S. Sorry if I'm being negative, I've tried to keep away from these movie threads in fear of becoming one of those type of posters. I just think some of this stuff needs to be said because I think a lot of people will be dissapointed when these films are actually released.

You say that but look at someone like Kate Bosworth. Her career was hardly illustrious and then along came Superman Returns. Plus we don't really know what Eliza is or isn't being offered. There were rumours she turned down the Nancy role in Sin City... whether that is true or not I don't know.

As for being negative, I didn't think you were particularly, maybe just a shot of realism, which is cool by me. Anyway, I've seen you be negative Matt and the above post didn't even come close

Quite right Keri, a big budget flop could do more harm than good to Eliza at the moment.

I know independent films aren't going to get Eliza's name out there, but I still like the fact that she's doing them, especially ones that sound good and interesting. There are a lot of actors who pretty much spend their whole careers doing indie films. Evan Rachel Wood is probably my favorite actress after Eliza and she's been doing awesome indie films for the past couple of years and her career doesn't seem to be dying anytime soon. It might be good for Eliza to build up her rep as a serious indie actress and then maybe she'll get offered some good, serious roles in bigger budget films.
