Update on distribution: Randall Miller has let me know that the Nobel Son is currently being sold internationally at Cannes - so fingers crossed it gets a good release

Variety's review for Nobel Son:
http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117...goryid=31&cs=1

Accusing "Nobel Son" of being over-the-top is like complaining the circus is too colorful. Flamboyance, in all its generic guises, at times seems to be the very raison d'etre behind Randall Miller's kidnapping thriller. Least effectively, such ostentation yields Danny DeVito's obsession-compulsion, strange character names and one-line backstories. Most prepossessingly, though, it flaunts Alan Rickman as a Nobel-winning scientist whose outrageous egomania lifts the pic far above the three-ring dog-and-pony-show. Uneven but enjoyably titillating black comedy should elate Rickman fans while pleasing aficionados of extra-flakey caper flicks.

...After a date with a weirdo poetess named City Hall (the irresistibly sexy Eliza Dushku), he is kidnapped.

Hey June. Randall said it was being sold at Cannes, I would assume that is not the same as being publicly screened.

Voltage takes on Alan Rickman starrer Nobel Son
Jeremy Kay in Cannes
17 May 2007 04:00

Voltage Pictures has acquired international rights to the crime caper Nobel Son starring Alan Rickman that premiered recently at Tribeca.

Director Randall Miller and CAA's Roeg Sutherland negotiated the deal with Voltage sales chief Nicolas Chartier, who will commence sales on the Croisette.

Chartier also announced that James Cromwell has joined Laurence Fishburne and Cole Hauser in the cast of police thriller Tortured from Five Star Pictures, Insight Film Studios and Proud Mary Entertainment.

In Nobel Son, Rickman plays a philandering chemistry professor who sets in motion a chain of lust, betrayal and revenge when his son is kidnapped and he refuses to pay up his Nobel Prize money as ransom.

Bryan Greenberg, Shawn Hatosy, Mary Steenburgen, Bill Pullman, Eliza Dushku, Danny DeVito and Ted Danson round out the ket cast. Jody Savin and Miller produced.

Miller and Savin hope to sign Rickman, DeVito and Dushku for the wine industry-themed Bottle Shock, which is set to go before the cameras on July 30.

"Nobel Son is a fast paced, fun caper, with a ton of plot twists in the vein of movies like Snatch and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels," Chartier said.

Production began this week in Vancouver on Tortured. Cromwell will play the director of the FBI whose undercover agent son (Hauser) questions his own identity as he infiltrates a crime syndicate.

Los Angeles-based Voltage's Cannes slate includes the fantasy drama Phoebe In Wonderland, starring Elle Fanning and Felicity Huffman, Kathryn Bieglow's Iraq War action title The Hurt Locker, and the supernatural thriller 100 Feet with Famke Janssen.

And it would be great if it was really a new project, plus with those actors.. all good !

No worries June As far as I understand Cannes is not just about the Film Festival that gets all the media attention with the awards and the big names posing on La Croisette, it's also one of the biggest market places for companies to sell their film for distribution. I guess that is what Voltage will be doing for Nobel Son.

I does sound like fun. As for the quote: ''Irresistibly sexy Eliza Dushku..'' I see the reviewer got their priorities right! I see it's being compared to Snatch obviously with out the incomprehensible accent from Brad Pit!

Thanks for all the info everyone.

The New York Post has a great after-party report of the Tribeca Film Festival and Nobel Son:

"While roaming around to check-out the hip crowd, I was yanked and seated on one side of the VIP couches. Tenjune's elite section was an elevated half-oval design that encased the main dance floor. The film's leading lady, Eliza Dushku had arrived fashionably late, so I was granted a few moments of interview time with her inside. The swift, accommodating publicist whisked me over to the starlet, in one full swoop.

The beautiful Dushku was radiant, dressed in a sexy, short, snug, black number, complimented with candy red stained lips. Her positive personality revealed much in displaying her drive and assertion needed to land this part, perfectly suited for her. She declared, "I auditioned really hard for the movie. I brought my own props to my audition, and let them know how badly I wanted the role."

Mission accomplished. Having now spoken to all of the cast, I finished off with the sparkling Dushku to allow her to get back to her family, friends and cast with whom she apparently shared a great camaraderie. "

Here's the link to the whole article if anyone's interested:

I know there aren't as big box office draws as they used to be but damn! Two movies in a row with Alan Rickman and Dany DeVito? That would be really cool!

That would really help her turn into a hip indie actress!
