A simple carpenter, Jack (played by Joey McIntyre – “Wicked,” “Boston Public,” New Kids On The Block) writes a play about his dead uncle, believing that this story can create a new start with his embittered father (Sean Lawlor – “Braveheart”). When nobody else will produce the play, Jack quits his job to direct it himself, mounting a production on the only stage he can afford – in the back room of an Irish pub on a little neighborhood street called Broadway. “It’s a movie about why stories and dreams are so important – why we need them and how they can change our lives,” says writer-director Dave McLaughlin. “That’s true not just on Broadway in New York, but for regular folks everywhere.” The movie also stars Eliza Dushku (“City by the Sea”, “Bring It On,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Fox’s “Nurses”, “Tru Calling”) and Mike O’Malley (CBS “Yes, Dear,” “28 Days,” “Pushing Tin”), as well as relative newcomer Jill Flint (“Garden State,” “Six Degrees,” NBC’s “Conviction”) in a break-out role as Jack’s new wife, who struggles between supporting his dream and stressing out about her own role in the production. Will Arnett (“Arrested Development,” “Let’s All Go To Prison,” “Blades Of Glory”), Sean Lawlor (“Braveheart”), Robert Wahlberg (“The Departed,” “Mystic River,” “Southie”), and Irish stage legend Vincent Dowling, former artistic director of Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, all play supporting roles, while “Saturday Night Live” star Amy Poehler makes a cameo performance as a touchy-feely set designer who contrasts with the earthy Boston gang. Filmmaker McLaughlin’s previous projects include the independent film “Southie,” which he co-wrote and which won the Jury Prize for Best American Independent Film at the 1998 Seattle Film Festival. His produced stage plays include “God Willing” and “Back To Before.” The youngest of an Irish-American family of eleven children, McLaughlin grew up in Boston’s neighborhoods and knows first-hand how rich in character and conflict that world is. Dushku, McIntyre, O’Malley, and Poehler also are Boston natives, adding to the authenticity of the finished film. Said Dushku, “I can't wait to see the final product with all of the fierce and loyal people we had involved in this film.” Several of the movie’s stars, including McIntyre, Dushku, O’Malley, Flint, and Arnett, as well as McLaughlin, will be on-hand for the festival premiere. Also expected are Buffalo Tom front man Bill Janovitz, who scored the film, and cinematographer Terrence Hayes. http://www.mmdnewswire.com/content/view/1543/ |

Only rush tickets are available for the premiere, but, if you can't get in on the 26th, tickets are still available for Sunday, April 29, at 8:00 pm at the Somerville. And the Somerville has beer! The Boston Independent Film Festival pays tribute to its home turf with tonight's world premiere of On Broadway. The locally shot comedy follows a carpenter-turned-playwright (Joey McIntyre) who stages a celebration of his late uncle's life with a performance in the back of the Skellig pub. The story is based on the real-life story of director/writer Dave McLaughlin--he too staged a play at the Skellig's sister, the Burren. McLaughlin wrote the script in 1999 and finally gathered together the financing to make the movie. He was also able to draw in McIntyre, Eliza Dushku, Amy Poehler, and Will Arnett. Check out the trailer: Based on the preview, On BroadwayMcIntyre, Dushku, and Arnett will be at the premiere. And if you can't gate-crash the premiere, you can always catch it on Sunday. http://www.bostonist.com/archives/20...r_broadway.php |

| Junior Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | REVIEW http://www.bostonist.com/archives/20..._of_boston.php On Broadway At the Independent Film Festival of Boston If you're looking to be touched, warmed and uplifted by a movie these days, don't go to the multiplex. You know this already, of course. Instead, make sure you live in a city where they host a film festival, where you might run into something as special as Dave McLaughlin's On Broadway, which premiered this weekend at the Independent Film Festival of Boston. It's the story of blue-collar Jack O'Toole (played by, yes, that Joseph McIntyre), who loses a beloved uncle in a freak work accident. Jack can't sleep the night after the wake, and decides he needs to write a play to capture the whirlwind of emotions the death brought out in his family. He faces resistance; his friends think he's a goof, his wife (played by Jill Flint) worries about the bills, and his taciturn father (Sean Lawlor) thinks Jack should shut up and get back to work. Even when things start rolling, there's trouble, too. The pub where the show will be staged keeps overbooking and chasing out their rehearsals. The itinerant actor playing the lead can't be bothered to remember his lines. And, of course, there's no money. This is all played out with such heart and depth by the cast that you're with Jack 100% right from the beginning. There are a couple of star turns, too. Watertown's Eliza Dushku plays Lena, an actress/insider who fortutiously runs into Jack at the pub, and the reigning First Couple of Comedy (Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) pop in for some memorable moments. (Arnett as a starstruck funeral director is especially brilliant.) There was a Q+A after the screening in which McLaughlin and some of the cast and crew said they were proud and honored to make a movie about Boston that doesn't rely on gangsters and murderers. And this movie is so undeniably Boston that the pride bursts through. Jack's buddy Neil (T conductor by day, amateur actor by night) takes Lena on a date in the cockpit of a Red Line train. The pub (the Skellig in Waltham) looks just like the Irish pub in everyone's neighborhood. And the soundtrack is heavy on local artists with Exploit Boston Radio's stamp of approval, including The Bleedin Bleedins and Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz. McLaughlin is still trying to get On Broadway into other festivals and into some kind of wide release. Here's hoping he's successful; this movie deserves an audience. |

| Junior Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | On Broadway Opens Just got back from the sold out world premiere of On Broadway at the Boston Independent Film Festival. Some of the actors including Robert Wahlberg and writer/director Dave McLaughlin were in attendance and answered some Q & A. I got a chance to chat briefly with Dave after the movie and I could tell he was beaming with joy. After all, the movie did get a standing ovation at the end. On Broadway is about a Boston playwright played by Joseph McIntyre (New Kids on the Block) who stages a play at local pub. The story simmers a little bit at the beginning before completely sucking you in. On Broadway is heartfelt, inspiring, warm and funny with some terrific dialog. And it has a ton of Dunkin Donuts, MBTA and Red Sox references to give it the proper Boston flavor. For an independent movie, it has a pretty good cast including McIntyre, Eliza Dushku (Tru Calling), Will Arnett (Blades of Glory), Mike O'Malley (Yes Dear) and Robert Wahlberg. So where can you see it you may wonder? Well, according to McLaughlin, On Broadway is off to the independent film festival circuit in hopes of getting picked up by a major studio for wider distribution. So the answer is probably sometime in the next six months either on DVD or at the theatres. http://hollywoodinthehub.blogspot.co...way-opens.html |
