But I worry about the show getting a little to funny or out of wack with Jane writing. Especially without someone like Joss there. The TC writing staff is just all over the board in terms of quality. Some of Jane's best work on Buffy had key scenes written by Joss. Earshot and Gingerbread are great episodes and fantastic models for Tru. But I worry about Jane turning TC into something similar to Doublemeat Palace. Or turning Tru and Jack into Buffy and Spike in Season 6. Jane was a totally Spuffy and there's already an undercurrent of Jack turning into Spike. I'm seeing message boards with people saying stuff like "Jack isn't evil. Or Jack's just misunderstood or Jason's hot and I'll refuse to accept he's not the star of the show". It's just like the Spike fans (or the Faith fans who tend to be in denial sometimes about Faith) and the whole "Spike's good Buffy's bad" kind of thing that drives me absolutely insane. I'm just afraid we'll get Tru getting into a depressive dark period and boinking Jack thanks to Espenson. (I will vomit if Tru and Jack kiss and will never watch TC again) Fox kept urging the X-Files writers to hook Mulder & Scully up from the beginning. They never listen to anything the networks says. With TC, the producers will do anything the network says without question. And that's worrysome, especially with someone who likes Spuffy running the show. But at least Jane should improve the dialogue and hopefully she's learned a few lessons from Season 6 of Buffy and doesn't go that direction with TC. | FF, the possibility actually is there. I do think Jane is an amazing writer, but I do also think that TC will change a lot with her on board. I'm hoping it'll be for the better...but will some TC viewers who have never watched Buffy just not get it? For fans who have loved Buffy, it'll be great. I'd love it if TC became a funnier show, while still maintaining the fantasy element like Buffy did. It might just take some getting used to. Right now I'm looking at Jane coming on board as something great. I'm just wondering how she'll handle writing for a show as different from Buffy as Tru Calling is. I personally didn't think the episode she did for The O.C. was anything spectacular. Maybe her Gilmore Girls stuff was, I don't watch the show. |

Whether or not that turns the non-genre fans against the show, I'm not sure. Some of the most vocal TC bashing has been by Buffy fanatics on the Bronze Beta, Buffista and Whedonesque. And this isn't just TWoP whiners. It's incredibly bright people who just can't get past the flaws of the show. TC has no coverage by TV Gal on Zap2it or AICN or by US scifi magazines. It's hard to have a cult/genre show that's disliked by the fans of cult/genre shows. TC definately needs to be funnier. They cast Zach to have the comedian sidekick, yet Davis' role is mostly serious. The same with Harrison. When there's a serious Tru plot A, they need something more humorous for subplots b or c. With the writers of Buffy, at lot of time different writers were writing each episode, most of the time uncredited. The whole writing staff broke each episode, each writer could tweak things. It was a team effort. The biggest thing that the TC writing staff needs to do is get something like that going. But they're so rushed and the production staff is divided between different countries and there seems to be some ego problems involved. I'm hoping for the best and preparing for the worst with Season 2 of TC. I'm not getting my hopes up. I jumped up and down when I heard Doug was going to TC and that didn't seem to help. I adore Jane, she's a great person, very talented and bright. I'm not sure she can write murder-mystery type shows (Doublemeat, anyone?) but perhaps she can bring more of a Buffy feel. It is kind of funny that at midseason, Doug Petrie left/quit/was fired (depending on who you talk to). Then David Solomon and David Grossman (who both directed many, many Buffy episodes) never directed any other TC episodes after Closure, Murder In the Morgue and Longest Day. All of the episodes they directed had such a Buffy feel to them. But after midseason, it was like they made this break from Buffy with bringing in writer/producers Doris Egan (Dark Angel) and Scott Shepherd (Haunted). It's kind of odd that it's back to Buffy-esque again with Espenson as co-exec prod. Once there's sides online maybe we can tell if Espenson has had an impact. |

| Junior Member ![]() ![]() | Agreed, it could go either way with Jane on board. We don't get TC over here yet, but I keep up with it all online and I can't say it's really something I wan't to watch when it comes here, but it is Eliza's ongoing project so I want it to be. That's why I am remaining optimistic for the second season, but time will soon tell. I was excited about petrie too at the start and then it did nothing for the show and he bailed. If it's still full of bad writing, I won't want to be watching it period but jane still does bring a certian hope that the team are aware that there are problems with the existing writers/writing... Tru Calling permieres in Australia on Friday, June 11th at 9:30pm on Seven. |
