Candace, I really don't think she is. Somehow, I can't even imagine Amanda playing a stripper while struggling to find real love like Natalie did so masterfully. And she did it without having to be nude! Natalie is a perfect example of what we are talking about. I was astonished by her range and depth when she first came to attention in the classic Leon (The Professional) and she is one young child star who has completely lived up to her potential. And she is steadily working with gifted artists who make profound statements with their movies. And, like Amanda, she still looks very young for her age. Twittering has actually hurt Amanda's reputation immensely because she continually comes off as ridiculously perky, moody and relentlessly positive. Who in the hell wants to read inspirational quotes all the time? It just makes me sick to my stomach. I have always thought that Amanda had a very high IQ but she doesn't seem to have one iota of common sense. She actually comes off more like one of those Baptist religious nuts that I had to deal with all through college. Having said all that, for some odd reason I just can't stop posting here and remaining a fan. I guess it's because she brought me so much joy in the last ten years. Who else is there to make me laugh? I hate SNL, loathe stand-up comics, am disgusted by Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Adam Sandler and their ilk and really don't like animated films. To be honest, I haven't really laughed at all since Sydney White came out. Is that pathetic or what? I grew up on Monty Python, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy and Dudley Moore, profoundly gifted physical comedians. And since I first saw Annie Hall and Manhattan all those years ago, I have seen every last one of Woody Allen's films and grown accustomed to a cerebral type of comedy that Woody is the expert at. I'd rather watch Hannah and Her Sisters a hundred times than any of this drivel that passes for comedy these days. John Hughes is another great example and I mentioned him in the other thread. Low-brow humor can be hilarious with an expert...hell, I rolled in the floor at the dinner scene and the fart jokes in The Nutty Professor. So I'm not just some snob who thinks he's sophisticated. Damn, I've rambled on and on and what is the point? My feeling is there are very few real comic writers left who could bring the absolute best out of Amanda and her gifts. I would love to see her on 30 Rock or a Tina Fey project, or in a James L. Brooks, Nancy Meyers or Cameron Crowe film. But she has hurt her reputation and image to the point where I'm afraid that no major comedy writer would even hire her. As I've said many times, this is a very, very sorrowful time to be an Amanda fan. Candace and Oz, thanks so much for at least listening to my laments. It really helps a lot. |
