Amanda Bynes' Career is "Canned" :(

This was a bad idea from the start. Is this the best project Amanda could obtain after a 2 year hiatus? When I first heard that Amanda is returning to tv, I was like woah what happened, maybe she is desperate for decent work. I decide to give it a chance, it may relaunch her career. After reading the first draft of the script, I was even more dismay. Now I am feeling a little gloomy. After Hairspray, Amanda should have immediately sign up to many other projects when her star power was hot.

Although I am being negative, I can't stop thinking, "what do we Amanda fans do now?"
We have nothing to look forward to in the near future. And even if Amanda start filming a movie around this time, we don't get to see it until 2010, worse is if the film is an independent/indie film, it would take a longer time to get out. Pictures of Amanda at events and out & about does very little to resurrect strong interest of Amanda.

I know that I keep postponing this but if I do not hear a credible, decent movie announcement by the end of June, I will no longer be involved in the Amanda forums or other Amanda related sites.

I will always be an Amanda fan at heart, but no longer an avid fan.

Pranks,I could have written your post. I feel the same way.This is a shock! Thanks to you, I had a chance to read the script to CANNED as well and felt the same, but was confident we saw an out of date version of the script and the show would be very different from that script. My question is, will they shop it around and will we ever get a chance to see it? I wonder how Amanda is doing after this news. Surprised with Amanda's name attached they would drop it,however if it was not any good in the first place I can not blame them.

So, where does Amanda go from here? Either we will see start seeing Amanda in films that do not suit her. She may just need the work and start doing terrible films we thought we never see her do (awful teen horror film,Disney-esque type films,teen sex comedies,etc.) or someone out there will see Amanda's potential and hire her in a good film.This is all very sad. I just hope Amanda does not take more time off while deciding what to do next.

I agree though, I'm tired of just seeing Amanda at the red carpet or at clubs. I miss the old Amanda, who worked hard and made great projects. I understand if she wanted to take a break, but I just hate to see her go down to nothing like Lindsay Lohan and other young stars.

I hope she finds a movie soon! Maybe she should take part in an ensemble piece to build up her celebrity again.

I like Amanda and I don't care what kind of movies she is in if she is very active or jsut a lil bit active. I am worried a little about her being a "party" girl lately and for me that's not a good sign. I know she is young but maybe she should reconsider her position cause partying is good but atm she is blendign in with the rest of the "partying" celebs and thats not good! She should focus on her carrer.

I'm terribly disappointed, too, but I always felt in my heart that, when you name a project 'Canned,' you're asking for trouble. Pranks, I hope that you will hold on a little longer because there still is hope. Amanda is just too talented not to have opportunites come her way. I just can't imagine all of the parts that she must have turned down during this hiatus. Why don't the big wigs in Hollywood see what a talented and lovely woman she is? Ok, so she doesn't have the biggest boobs in the world, she's not exactly exotic looking and she doesn't appear in Maxim and FHM and strut around nude on some beach. That is what they seem to be looking for in their young stars these days and Amanda is so above that. Having said that, I will NEVER, EVER stop believing in Amanda and hoping the best for her. Wow you guys are really unhappy that the Amanda's shows' pilot made the cut..... I loved WILAY, and i hope Canned is even better and am looking forward to getting to see Amanda a lot in the show constantly. Depending how good the show is she will pick up other movie roles and she said previously she would like to keep making movies. Again she is still only 23 years old, and she has a long career ahead of her. Please don't give up hope, i don't see this as the worst thing to happen to her..... i see lots of success in her future. Let's hope for a great pilot, i will be

Richy, I am so, so sorry to be the one to have to break this to you, but Canned didn't get picked up which means that the network DID NOT choose it to be one of the shows on the fall schedule. We are very upset because Amanda went to so much trouble to be a part of this show and now it will never air. I know this seems like a very sad time to be an Amanda fan but, as I said before, I honestly feel like we are on the brink of great things from our girl. Maybe this will be the wake-up call that causes her to consider her career more seriously and actively pursue more challenging and rewarding parts in major and independent films. I am a huge Melissa Joan Hart fan, and I was very hurt too when Sabrina, The Teenage Witch was canceled and she had to resort to doing movies with no budget and no stars (Ok, you MIGHT be able to call Carmen Electra a BIT of a star) and really bad tv movies. Just as with Melissa, I know without a shadow of a doubt how talented and intelligent Amanda is so there HAS to be some casting agents who will take note of that and recommend her for parts to her talent agency. Let's just all hang on and try to stay hopeful! I know that I have said that very thing many times before in the last few years, but there is still the possibility of Hairspray 2 and many more projects that might come her way. Or, she could just go back to being a fashion maven and resurrect her Dear brand. Either way, I am still so very proud of her and what she has accomplished at a very young age!

Just try to be patient buddy. I've been a fan of Amanda since 1999 and I have seen many ups and downs in her young career. But she is still barely in her twenties and there are many years of great projects ahead for her if she wants them. I just start to wonder sometimes if she is really THAT interested in her acting career anymore. She obviously has enough money to live very comfortably for a long time to come or we would have seen her by now in some low-grade projects. I would still be happy if she just concentrated on her fashion design career, married and settled down and did the ocassional guest spot on Family Guy or some quality tv shows. But I'm still hoping against hope for so much more. All of us here know what unlimited potential she has and it goes without saying that she is an astonishing beauty. In fact, I would say this about her even if I didn't like her so much...she is honestly, truly the most flat-out beautiful woman I have ever seen. EVER! So I'm happy even if we only get the occasional pap shots or fashion show appearances. But that's just me. I know that many fans were expecting so much more and I don't blame them. But I will always, ALWAYS be a fan because she has made me laugh and smile more than any woman who has ever lived...more than Lucille Ball, more than Bette Midler, more than any female performer I have ever experienced.

And yeh Tim i feel the same. I've never been this crazy about a celebrity, or anyone for that matter. Something about her...... just melts me... puts me in a happy mood, but at the same time somehow makes me get butterflies in my stomach. I know its weird, don't ask me how, but it just happens. I enjoy seeing new pictures of Amanda and all, however I sort of wish she would not go to as many of these red carpet events and so on. I am sure she wants to be seen and stay in the public eye and all and maybe some meetings even occur at these events,who knows?

I think Amanda needs to be more aggressive. I think Amanda needs to go out and find what she wants to do and stop waiting for it to fall in her lap. Amanda needs to go find a good story or book and buy the rights and own that property and develop it as HER project.Amanda needs to start a production company(Maybe Deer Productions?)Amanda needs to hire comedy writers,tell a writer what character she would like to play and what story she would like to tell.If Amanda is not happy with what she is being offered she needs to take the initiative and either find it herself or as a producer, hire a writer to develop something specifically for her and her a lone.

Amanda has shown she has a business side to her.Look at Tina Fey.Not only is she attractive and smart but she is also very funny.Tina started out writing and she developed her own TV show based on her experience at SNL.I think Amanda doing a TV series (or even a movie) about a child actor trying to make it in Hollywood and revive her career would be perfect. She could use actual experiences that happened to her in her story.There is an old saying, "Write what you know".

Hollywood is such a competitive town.If you are not the 'right' weight or have the 'right' look then you do not get noticed as quickly.Amanda is getting older and Hollywood is obsessed with youth. She needs to really get to work on something and fast.No more taking time off. No more wanting to spend more time with family.I fear if she meets a new guy she will want to spend time with him and take even more time off.

Look at this TV show not being picked up as a positive sign.Amanda as a mom is not something that sounds to appealing in my opinion. Amanda as a college student or 20 something girl living and trying to get buy in 2009 does sound like something I would like to see.She needs to really work extra hard to make herself stand out.It's not up to her agent or Hollywood taking notice of her. No, it's all up to her to stand out from all the others and this may mean she has to take control over her career and not let others do it for her.

Hmm true, i wasn't that rapped on the mother figure either. I love the fun, playful, crazy, Holly like characters Amanda plays .....If Amanda is anything like Holly ..... . And im sure part of her would have been in her character and her character may have rubbed off on her as well.

Wow, this is really great to be having such a 'calm' and intelligent discussion about the state of Amanda's career. Candace, you made some good points and I also think that Amanda needs to get aggressive and take control of her career. Apparently, that might be the only way she is going to get quality projects now because noone seems to be interested in hiring her for movies anymore. What makes me so mad is that she just had the one film, Sydney White, that didn't do well at the box office and suddenly her career is cold? It just doesn't make sense. That's why I keep saying that I wish she had a recording career to concentrate on because it has worked very well for ladies such as Hilary Duff and Mandy Moore. And, having heard Amanda sing, I think she is at least as good as Hilary and Lohan, if not better. I just wish the best for her and, like Richy said, I just want her to be happy. And, Richy, I feel the exact same way about Amanda and always have. There is just something so extraordinarily special about her that makes her a cut above the rest. For one thing, she is literally the only actress in her age group (or younger for that matter) who REALLY knows how to make people laugh. I love the sardonic quality that she brought to Holly and I really do think she is a lot like that character in real life. Just watch the MTV Diary again and see how naturally funny, goofy and adorable she is! It really makes me wish that I had pursued a directing or writing career in Hollywood because I would put her in every film I made like Woody Allen did for Scarlett Johansson. She is THAT good.

It's funny you say that Tim. I have thought for a while now that Amanda seems to be born to be Woody Allen's latest Muse.Diane Keaton, Mia Farrow, Scarlett Johansen all were good, but Amanda might upstage him.I am a huge fan of Wes Anderson and would love to see her go for a more dry/adult type of humor (or as my boyfriend calls it intellectual comedy)

I always thought that Amanda and Jake Gyllenhaal would make a great couple, because he is cerebral and quiet and she is boisterous and upbeat. My dream actually came true as far as Woody is concerned because my favorite actress of all time, Nicole Kidman and her BFF Naomi Watts are going to be in his new film. Wes is absolutely brilliant! He uses the great Bill Murray so much and I think that Amanda and Bill would be a perfect match as father and daughter. Most people call his work intellectual, but I just think of them as very funny comedies. I'm from the old school of Monty Python and the original SNL cast. I always thought that Amanda would be perfect for SNL, and yet they have never even had the good sense to ask her to host. My secret thought is that they were afraid that Amanda might upstage them! LOL! My second favorite director is Paul Thomas Anderson and I always think that Amanda would really shine in one of his dark, brooding dramas. All that Amanda needs is the chance to work with a script by a great writer like PTA or Woody and the whole world would see what a remarkable talent she is! And I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see her in a buddy comedy with the great Bette Midler. Maybe they could play mother and daughter in a new sitcom! Hollywood, are you LISTENING?

I agree, this would be the ideal route for Amanda to take. Unfortunately, it takes a HELL OF A LOT of money to form a production company and do what it takes to produce and distribute a film project or even a television project. Forbes magazine estimated that in 2007 Amanda made around 4 million dollars. Even if Amanda's net worth is 5 times that, that would be a mere spit in the ocean compared to Hollywood standards for what is needed to produce a film. Yes, I know there are very good independent films out there that have been made for considerably less but most of them usually go unnoticed and only a lucky few make it to mass market distribution. Quite frankly it would be very difficult for Amanda to make a go of it on her own.

You mentioned Tina Fey and 30 Rock. Well, Tina is only one of 5 executive producers along with Lorne Michaels. In addition, there are also 3 producers one of whom is Alec Baldwin. As you know, the producers are the ones who are responsible for coming up with the money to fund a project. They also tend to get a say in the final product UNLESS they have complete and total confidence in the head producer, in this case Tina's, decisions. I don't know if this is the case or how much input and influence Lorne Michaels and Alec Baldwin have in the final product. Needless to say, it has led to a very successful project. But then again, it is only a 30 minute television comedy and not a feature length movie.

I would be surprised that Amanda hasn't already thought of trying to form her own production company but I'm equally certain that it would take considerable time, effort and luck to do so. Nothing would please me more than for her to form her own company. The trick is to convince other more affluent individuals to invest in it while allowing Amanda to retain creative control of her projects.

I believe that one such potential partner would be Seth MacFarlane. Right now Seth is pretty well situated financially as well as on a production level. According to Wikipedia, "A recent deal signed with The Fox Broadcasting Company has made MacFarlane the highest-paid television writer and producer in history. ... and is reportedly being paid $100 million by 20th Century Fox TV for his most recent contract with them.". I hope that Amanda and Seth parted on good terms after dating since they seemed to have already established a good working relationship as well.

Like I said, I would be thrilled to see Amanda be able do this as as owning her own production company would be the ideal situation. That said and in the meantime, I think it would be a good idea if Amanda did what Hilary Duff has done recently and do guest appearances on at least one or more television series. It would give her a broad range of acting exposure in drama as well as comedy without pinning her hopes to one specific project like she did with CANNED. She could then still explore other projects all the while exposing people, who aren't as familiar with her as we are, to her considerable talents and abilities.

All that having been said, I seriously doubt that Amanda reads the posts to this or any other forum so all of our suggestions, ideas, hopes and desires for her will never reach her. That's sad too since there have been some seriously intelligent ideas and suggestions (and some not so intelligent) that have been expressed here.

Oh well, I guess we'll just have to hope for the best and pray that Amanda has the good sense and judgment to do what she needs to do to salvage what appears to be her slowly diminishing career.
