Question about posting pics

I have a serious question:

is it really punishable, to copy pics of the internet, and that you can get a punish where you have to pay 1,000s of dollars or you have to go to prison.

well, is that true? I mean, then we all are not allowed to post any pics at any forum, don´t you think?
Or we all would be in prison right now.

I mean, we all post a lot of pics from other sites here
And we also credit them normally

Do you know anything about that?

A friend told me about that

If pictures are in the public domain then there's not a problem. Posting pics that have a known copyright on them, those from the pic selling sites, is a breach of copyright and therefor technically could be followed up with legal action.

It is illegal to post copyrighted pictures; nothing to do with prison though. Fansites usualy dont count, wether there credited or not, they usualy dont have any copyright claim.

Its very rare for anyone to care if you used a copyrighted picture, but I have heard of a few sites being warned or threatened with legal notices or forced to take the website down, which is why we have that no agency tagged picture rule here.
