Default Postcounts (poll added - please vote)

Missing post counts seem to be a common complaint. Tonight I re-ran a post count on all users so that your post count actually reflects how many posts from you are in the database - everyone's post counts either stayed the same or increased - no one decreased. Hopefully this helps everyone feel better while I look further into the ongoing "missing postcount" issue.

I kept a backup of the old post counts, in case there are any questions.

Any questions/concerns, please let me know. Thanks.

EDIT - Please vote on the poll above. Do you want us to show full postcounts (back to about 2003) or keep it as it was before (showing only counts since March 2006)?

How can you tell they're off?

Those numbers are exactly what is in the DB (running a count by username on the posts..). The counts actually include the old version of the forums as well, since those posts are archived (but not displayed).

By the way, from what I can tell comparing the actual data in the database to what was stored in the user table for post counts, the numbers have been off for a long time......

I can exclude archives if the majority would prefer. Kind of makes sense to include them though, doesn't it?

Archives are from the board before it went to VB. When the board was updated all post counts were reset to zero, fresh start or too hard or some reason for it.

Only some of the archives seem to have been brought back into play so the counts that are there don't reflect everything. Just a mixture of now and then posts. No archive would bring it back to the year zero of when VB came in.

Hmm..they're all there (the archives - as far as I know).. They don't appear in the current forums, but they're still in the database.. I'm slowly restoring the usable stuff since it is a waste not to have it appearing in the thread list in the forums. Since the archives are all in the database, they were all included in the recount. If anyone thinks they're still off (by more than few posts), please send me a PM and we'll sort it out. Thanks.

Like BM said we switched and reset to zero, but because so many people didnt want to lose there very high post counts they where recored, in the Hall of Fame.

Even with the archives brought back, the numbers are just random.

We've noticed the restoration of some old posts in some of the Hollywood Starlets forums. So it's deliberate, not a random thing. Is this going to happen in all forums then?

Is this okay with you guys? If so, I will certainly continue to restore posts from all of the archives. There is a LOT of content there.

The deeper the archives, the more the search engines will pick up, the more traffic will arrive here, the more participation we'll get in the forums...

This isn't directed specifically at you, but I get the feeling some people aren't happy with the changes... I'm sorry if anyone feels that I'm making wild changes to the boards. fanHost is a community and I take your feedback very seriously. If any changes don't turn out to be positive, the changes can be very quickly rolled back.... So please provide all feedback, good or bad...

Thanks.

I didn't realize there was a 'hall of fame' for archived postcounts. It's awesome that you guys are so quick to respond and explain this all to the newbie (me)

If the consensus is that we should use postcounts from the day the new board started, that's fine. It can easily be done.

But either way, there was a serious issue going on with postcounts and it is a lot easier to run a proper count on the entire database, than to edit each account manually to fix them. ;)

I had a look in the archived Buffy forum and some of the info in there is complete garbage. Threads with start dates 1970, started by no one, so you might find some corruption in the database I think for the before VB stuff. I think this is the reason post counts had to be reset, it was discussed what people wanted but in the end the database was so corrupt that they had to be. So post counts from the board start date would probably be better.

Yeah, I saw that too. I don't think the data is corrupted (i.e. some data is wrong) so much so as there is simply missing data. For example, January 1 1970 is what it shows if the date value is "0" due to the way vbulletin stores dates. On the first few starlet forums that I imported archives into as a test, anything with invalid data was excluded from the import.

In that case I guess its a good thing, everyone here always wants more people to come. Though most of those threads will be long dead and pictures gone.

Overall I think people like it. Theres always threads about issues and any problems that come up, its not that people dont like it, everything that happens just gets posted on. New things sometimes take time to get used to. I remember I hated Zoints at first, now I like it. Its good to see that your trying stuff to improve the forum and a lot of your ideas sound cool.

And these ever so random glitches, arnt anything new, at all.

Marc, with importing the archives are you making the archive section at the bottom of the page live, I saw it earlier, now it's gone. Or are you putting them in the actual current forums? Just saw on JLH that they have 100,000 posts now and some really old stuff.

Moving them into a single forum.

While a lot of photo links are dead, there is also a lot of good discussion (and a lot of live photo links) deep in those archives that are currently sitting unused unless we bring them back ..

If we keep them in the archive as opposed to importing them into the main forums, I'd have to keep them closed for posting (to avoid having two JLH forums which are active....).. which means no one could add extra information to older threads, contribute additional photos, etc, which is kind of a pain, isn't it?

All in one forum makes more sense. You know they are importing as locked threads though?

*waits for the old old intellectual discussions from Whatever to return*
