Flirty or just friendly?

So I'm helping fix the out riggers to this boat, never done it before but then the captain of the boat club comes over and chats. I tell him I don't know what I'm doing and he says something like; don't worry you look good doing it, that's all that matters. I don't really know the guy well enough to work out how he meant it. Was he flirting or just being friendly? (As it happens I neither fancy him or am even looking so it didn't matter).

Maybe it's because I've been with someone for so long but I really can't tell the difference. How do people work that out, is it a problem? I usually assume they're just being friendly, especially other women.

Is he a tradesman? I've heard tradesman say that quite a few time. I think it means, "no, but it's close enough and will do" or "yes, but you're a woman so I won't admit it".

It would depend on the person, and what's going on in his head. I give out compliments all the time but since I'm married I know there is nothing behind them. I don't really think about it, they just come out.

I wasn't offended by him, I've known too many men like him to take offence and I know his type too; successful and confident, on the surface arrogant but actually a decent guy.
I still don't know, he was probably just in a good mood, although I did think I looked pretty ok(sunglasses are a boon!).
I'll should see him again on Sunday, so we'll see!

It's English... you know, my native tongue... our shared language.

But I think my husband shares your view, judging my the casual sneer he gave when I mentioned the conversation.
