Default Burried the same day you die

Wow, that was quick, my neighbour died last night and she is being buried today. Even though Goans are slow as **** to get a job done they are on the ball when it comes to death.

Another thing I found odd was that people take out adverts in papers to celebrate the anniversary of someone's death.

Didn't really know the neighbour, she was 80+ years old, had a good life, had a stroke and it was near impossible to talk to her. She died in her sleep so it was a painless death. The family are taking it ok, they saw her in a lot of pain till then.

Funeral is actually happening right now.

There is really no need for a wake these days in the sense that a person might appear dead when he/she isn't. The purpose of the delay between death and burial is to allow the family and friends to be notified of the death and come to grips with it. A death is usually not "celebrated". What is celebrated is the life and accomplishments of the deceased.

That's right, but there has to be some time for the planning of the funeral. And then one has to choose a time where most people are unlikely to have previous appointments, so funerals are usually on the weekend.

My grandmother died on the 27th of March, the funeral was last Saturday.

First allow me to extend my condolences on the death of your grandmother, Samson. I did not know my paternal grandmother very well as she died when I was very young. On the other hand, my maternal grandmother was like a second mother who spoiled us mercilessly.

That is an unusually long time for the USA. A more typical time period is 2 to 3 days however as I said previously, this is up to the family. Naturally the funeral home wants a fast turn over and Christian funerals are never on Sunday although the wake or viewing of the deceased is frequently on the weekends as more people are available then. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Jewish funerals cannot be held on the Sabbath either. Remember, the funeral ceremony is to provide closure for the family so that they may come to grips with the death.

So true.

I've seen some bodies not buried for up to 3 weeks, even a month, and that's in Canada, mind you. But on those occasions the body were to be shipped to some other country for burial.

Quick funerals would make my job a whole lot easier. Souls tend to want to stick around for their own wake.

What's a Goan?

It's the common form of funerals here.

I figured the cops would come round and it would end up in an autopsy, figured at least a week. I really don't know about this kind of thing.

Her grandson, about 25-30 has been up here the last few days. Guy is really a nice guy and clued up but after some accident a few years ago he comes across a little different. He's actually pretty fun to hang out with.

I feel your pain, I had two grandparents die last year. Both in their 90's. I kinda regret I wasn't there for them a lot more a few years ago.

I goan is a native to Goa India. Thinking about it a little more they really don't have many options to put the body on ice. Leaving it too long and the body will quickly decompose. Last few days it's been about 35C with a high humidity. bodies won't last long here. I just never thought about it before.

Not really like the West, most family members will stay near by and have no problem getting time off for the funeral - 5 pm.
