Default Can you swim?

We have a show here called Bondi Rescue which is all about the lifesavers on Bondi Beach. It seems an incredible number of people who can't swim decide to go swimming in the lovely waves and rips, which is somewhat brave....or really foolish.

Here swimming is often a part of the school curriculum, possibly something to do with most Aussie cities being coastal.

Sure, my parents sent me to the YMCA when I was a kid - "Throw him in and see if he sinks."

thanks, just found out itīs not a medal (LOL) but an emblem/insignia. so I didnīt won a competition, but made this stuff which tells you how good you are. there is only the gold one better, and well, if you wanna be a lifeguard. so I guess Iīm not bad, although itīs years ago, but I was always a "water rat" and not afraid of my hair getting wet LOL

Which one - the siver one for kids or the one for adulds?

http://www.richtig-schwimmen.de/allg...abzeichen.html
(for those non-german speakers: "tauchen" means "to dive" and "schwimmen" means "to swim" )

... I could have sworn when I learned how to swim, a criterion for the silver emblem (for kids) was 400m in 16 minutes, not in 25... Darn backstroking. I never really cut a figure in that. You don't see where you're going and only injure hand and head.

But I can dive 35 m far. Of course that's nothing compared to this guy (he probably had warmer water in the pool than I had): http://www.koreus.com/video/apnee-re...onde-166m.html

I only like deep water in a lake, not a pool or the ocean. Weird, I know. The truth is, I'm not a great swimmer, I had lots of ear troubles as a child so I I didn't learn to swim until I was like 8 or 9 and even though I was very athletic in other things, I was a sucky swimmer. My boys, on the other hand, are like fish. They love the water. That's because like Fix said, we sorta just threw them in there (mommy very close by of course), also we don't do floaties or water wings or whatever the phuck you call those things. I just preferred to get in there with them and let them figure it out.

but why do you prefer deep water in a lake then when you are not a great swimmer? instead of swimming in a pool where there is always a save edge. thatīs really very weird

I prefer swimming in the ocean, preferably the open ocean where there's waves. It's a lot more challenging to have the seaweed around the legs, the waves trying to slam you on the bottom, an under tow that can drag you out to sea or the possibility of a stray shark looking for a quick snack.

I swam competitively when I was a kid. Backstroke was my preferred stroke but swimming pools are so predictable.

I prefer a pool where I'm sure the water is clean. only Evian water.
