Default 14 year old boy killed for asking to be a guys valentine.

Got this at another forum. No link yet though.

Quote:
Name:Remembering Lawrence King (Murdered Because He was Gay.)

Description:On February 12th, 2008, 14-year-old Lawrence King was shot and killed at E.O. Green School in Oxnard, California.

A fellow student (aged 14 years old) came into their school's computer lab and shot Lawrence "Larry" twice in the back of his head.

A few weeks prior to the shooting, Lawrence had publicly come out at his school for being gay and endured much harassment every where that he went. He had asked the boy who shot him to be his valentine not realizing that it would be the death of him. The main group of students that harassed him were the shooter and his friends.

Would you kill someone just because you didn't want to be their valentine?

He'll never graduate. He'll never learn how to drive. He'll never get his own job. His family and friends won't ever get to see him again..

..Just because someone couldn't handle his differences.

Please invite as many people as you can so that Lawrence King's story can get out there. This horrible event has gotten almost no coverage in the news. If the media isn't going to cover it, then we will.

America! Fuk yeah!

I heard Ellen talk about this on her show. Tragic... it says so much about what's f*cked up in the world.

^Thanks for that.

I can't even get past the fact that they were only in eighth grade...this story is messed up on so many levels.

No surprise!
I'm a 30 years old man and what has in my head? Nothing ...
What has in a 14 years old head? Double nothing!

If I was 14, and a gay kid of the same age asked to be my valentine I'd probably slug the guy. (prepares for backlash) However I wouldn't think about killing someone.

If someone a grown man came up to me today and asked to be my valentine I'd probably laugh it off and say something like, "Thanks, but I don't swing that way."

It would depend on the situation though to some extent. I could see myself being upset enough in some situations to be aggressive.

I'd say that this happens here in Brazil also, but Brazil is in America.

Kid should have known better then to ask that of someone who isn't gay. Doesn't deserve to be killed, but he should have known there would have been some backlash, kids that age aren't too open to stuff like that.

Maybe he thought the other kid was gay or the other kid was gay, it hardly matters, does it.

It doesn't matter in that the kid didn't deserve to die. However if he knew the kid wasn't gay (I'm assuming he wasn't considering the reaction) it was just stupid to do what he did. Kids are cruel at that age, and at the very least he should have expected to be teased. It's not right, but I see crap like that all the time.

My point was, maybe the other kid was gay, in which case why shouldn't he ask him to be his valentine.

Well IF he was I still wouldn't have asked in public at that age. Still would be asking for trouble with the other kids. If he was gay I don't get why he killed the kid.

Really?! I thought you worked with kids?
Imagine this scenario; the boy is gay but has been brought up to believe homosexuality is not just wrong but evil/against the will of God. The last thing this kid wants is for any of his friends and family to know or even guess he might be gay. If some well known gay boy asks him to be friends, isn't that the worst thing that could happen?
He might even be so desperate to keep the gay boy at bay that he kills him.
This sounds like a more likely scenario that pure homophobia.

I think pure homophobia is more likely, but maybe that's just because of where I teach & live. Rednecks everywhere around here...

Flute: I've heard kids calling others fa.gg.ots and other such terms. Most of the time not even directed at someone who's gay. Obviously I put a stop to it, but I don't deal with anything more then typical name calling. Anything big that comes up I write up the people involved and let the administrators handle it. My opinions on the gay lifestyle is a bit different then the public schools, so I'm not going to involved any more then protecting all the kids I'm responsible for.

There were things that have came up I haven't been involved in. For instance a 6th grade boy raped a 4 year old boy last year. There are a lot of fights that sometimes have something to do with someone being homosexual. It's mostly girl fights, which surprized me a little.

I think that's a very simplistic way of looking at it... imagine how hard it is for gay boys in your area. Self loathing and fear can be far more powerful than hatred of someone else.

You contradict yourself. So if most fights are girl stuff how can a lot be about homosexuality?

And we weren't talking about rape.

I'm talking about girls fighting over other girls, and girls beating up other girls for being homosexual. No contradiction there...

ok, it was worded to sound like a lot of the girls' fights are about homosexuality, ie other girls. That being all of the girls at school, who I assume are heterosexual in the main.

Yeah, most girls in the school are heterosexual, but we have a growing bi community in the female pop.
