Default Holiday planning

There's a conference in Toronto next year, late October I think, which I'm hoping I can talk the company into sending me to and since they've already mentioned wanting me to see some other plants I might get to go to some other cities scattered around Northern America.

I figure if I'm in that part of the world it would be a good time to then take my holidays and do a bit of extra sight seeing. I've heard New Orleans, particularly the French Quarter is worth seeing, but I'm also considering going to South America to see something a bit different. Chile is meant to be beautiful, so the guys I've worked with from there say, my neighbours also suggest Mexico. If not South America I might do a stop on the way home in SE Asia since I'd like to see more of Vietnam.

So what can people here recommend? Val, tell me about Brazil, is it safe or if I go there would I be best off to go on an organised tour?

Mexico is nice - on the coasts. I've been to Costa Rica which was beautiful, inexpensive and fun, and I've been to Venezuela which was also very nice but you don't wanna go there now.
New Orleans is a great place to visit. All the historical areas are fine since Katrina. The food is fantastic, you can stay downtown and walk or take the streetcar wherever you want to go. The weather is usually warm or mild but DO NOT GO IN AUGUST its hot as the Jungle then, I would recommend Otober through Dec, Mardi Gras time, or Jazz Fest is fun last weekend in April - through first weekend in May.

I wouldn't go to Mexico except if you're interested in the either the pre-Columbian sites or the beach resorts and you have very nice ones in Australia. The remainder of the country is pretty dismal, either hot and humid or hot and arid. The booze is cheap, however.
Chile, on the other hand, is very picturesque. The elevation may give you a problem, however.
Never been to Brazil.
New Orleans, at least in pre-hurricane days, was fun.
Remember, Toronto in winter can be pretty cold and snowy. Its right across the lake (Huron, I think) from Buffalo, New York where they measure snowfall in feet not inches. At least it is in the English part of Canada.
Go to Chicago. Its not too far from Toronto and it has a diverse cultural environment.

Fantastic city, so much to do.

Err...visit the tower.

But great people and a beautiful city.

eh, I love the city. Been all over the world and that's the one place I would like to place my hat.

One thing that bugged me about Toronto was the lack of pubs though.

I've been to Toronto before, only for a day, but I loved it. Reminded me a lot of Melbourne and I felt really comfortable there. I've also been to Chicago, again only for a day. I like it, very big and busy though.

Toronto isn't all that far from New York so I'd like to see there, and to spend some time in LA, other than LAX.

You could consider tourism, you've made a good sell of the place there Op. It'd be late October/early November, so that should be OK weather wise? Do they get Autumn/Fall there? Where the leaves change colours? I know it sounds simple but it just doesn't happen here, green trees all year around.

It'd be for the old historic type areas if I went there. You're right, we have beaches here and if I was after a beach holiday I'd head up north.

Hmmmm.....I wouldn't recommend Brazil......from what I heard from some people it's scarier than Iraq.....or what you would think Iraq would be like.

It's a fair way from Toronto etc, but since all the direct flights from Australia land there it's somewhere I'd probably be landing anyway. There's nothing direct from Australia to New York, they all have stopovers on the way.
