I was ROBBED while on AmTrak!!!!!!!!

So my girlfriend & me were on the train from Chicago to my home & I put my laptop along with my 350GB External Harddrive that was in my laptop case in the overhead above our seats & someone stole it from me while we were asleep & the AmTrak workers on the train said they couldn't do anything for me.

Let the suing of AmTrak commence!!!!

All my personal pictures, music collection, movies, & Tv shows gone for good.

I agree with above statement. THAT SUCKS.

But you're suing them because you fell asleep and someone stole your stuff? I'm not sure why that is their fault. Then again I am used to NYC trains. So it's every man for themselves. How does AmTrak work?

Because after I told the workers on the train that it was stolen they didn't even ask my name(since my laptop case had a tag on it) or try & look on the entire train to see if it was still on board or not before we got off.

The timing could be crucial for the commencing of suing AmTrak. Was the train still in motion when you reported the theft to the train workers? If you did and they did nothing to search the train or do any questioning, you may have good reason to sue.

I don't get that either, why do Americans need to sue someone, can't you just claim the insurance and be done with it?

Suing is a way of life here.

Rebel may have a case if there was some sort of negligence on by AmTrak workers. But the whole story in detail needs to be stated... to a lawyer.

Unless one of us have law degree... Consult a lawyer and get back to us what he/she says.

You don't have home contents insurance? My nephew had his i-pod stolen (at knife point on his 17th birthday, the bastards) but it's covered on his parents home insurance and his first port of call was not a lawyers but the police. Weird huh?

100% agreed. But... it's not all uncommon to sleep on an amTrack train. Some trips, like a plane, can take hours. People sleep in planes, too, don't they? So, train or plane, it is really your fault that someone went thru your valuables? Don't think so.

If there was a theft on a plane, this might have been handled a little bit better seeing is that even if you have a picture of a gun on your shirt they'll get paranoid and tackle you down for not complying to change your shirt.

If the workers had the opportunity to do something about it, and failed to take such opportunity, and Rebel can prove their negligence, there may lie the prove of damage. There's your case.

(as for compensation, well... don't settle for anything lower than 10,000)

You can't really compare being on a train to being on a plane, where no one can get off. What do you want the AmTrak staff to do; search everyone who leaves the train? I don't think passengers would agree to that or to the massive price rise in fairs to pay for the staff increases.

Amtrack trains don't make frequent stops like a subway, it's not if the robber had a short window of opportunity "stole and dashed" his way out at the next stop. Like I said before, (1)trips on this train can take hours, and (2)the timing of the incident and the timing between the announcement to the crew and when the passengers got off. These may be crucial factors that can determine whether or not Rebel can bring a case.

I don't know if the staff have the legal right to do that, do they?
Here on the railways we have Transport Police who have the same (I believe) powers as the regular police force.
