Gay bar wins right to ban heterosexuals
Monday May 28 05:00 AEST
By ninemsn staff

A Melbourne gay bar has been granted an exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act in a landmark ruling which will allow security to refuse entry to heterosexuals.

The owners of Collingwood's Peel Hotel, which came under fire in April for promoting a gay Anzac Day party, successfully argued to the state planning tribunal that banning heterosexuals from the club would prevent "sexually based insults and violence".

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal granted the controversial powers to the club last week, the Herald Sun reports.

VCAT deputy president Cate McKenzie claimed that allowing straight men and women into the club would defeat the purpose of the venue.
...full story here

hmmm.....what's a heterosexual look like?

HA! They're banning lesbians, too. Because lesbians are so likely to hit on the "girls", yo.

And isn't there already a club like this in Melbourne anyhow? It's been gay men only for like a hundred thousand years or so. That place doesn't scream and shout about it, so I'm guessing this is just a free publicity grab from this joint.

The club you are talking about will be the Peel Hotel, the one in the story. It's been a gay men joint for years, just now they've made it exclusive.

I thought the one I'm thinking of already was legally a men only bar. Could be wrong though, it's been a loooong time since I was in Melbourne.

If you are thinking of an exclusive gay men club in Melbourne it'll be The Peel. It's well known for it, wasn't legal though, just through majority patronage.

Sounds like some reverse discrimination.

But, I know we have, dont you already have exclusive mens clubs and womens clubs, and status clubs, this doesnt seem to much different.

The only other case I can think of is a gym that is women only, they also had to get permission to legally discriminate. There's a bit of a difference in that though since it's pretty obvious whether someone is a male or female.

In this case the assumption is that security guards to determine someone's sexual preference on appearance.

Maybe the security guards ask them to bend over and see how far?

I'm not really a big fan of reverse or positive discrimination. I realise there are some genuinely bigoted people out there who make decisions based on race, gender, or whatever else but if someone is that anti I would expect the workplace would be pretty unpleasant anyway.

My understanding is that in the US there's actual quotas? We don't have that here but the lower numbers of women in certain fields or management does get raised. If it's a point of focus and positive discrimination then is that saying that race, gender or whatever it may be can't get there without the help. And if they do, then how do they know that it was for that reason and not just to balance the numbers.

You mean affirmative action. It only applies to government jobs or companies with government contracts or those that get tax dollar support. Other then there there is no quotas for race or gender. Some companies and colleges also chose do use it.

The issue with this is, the most qualified person that applies doesnt always get the job. Its unfair to the person and the company. And when someone unqualified is a teacher or principal (my high school principle), its not fair to students. Im not a supporter of it.

We to have lower numbers of woman and minorities in management. Some part due to discrimination, part due to culture, and possibly part due to gender preferences.
