Default Did you know....

that there is a risk to the safety of those who are serving in Iraq?

I know this will be a surprise for most who would have thought that a war zone would be quite a safe place to be, but apparently that's not the case.

Quote:
PRINCE Harry may be barred from serving with his men when his regiment is deployed to Iraq next year because of concerns for his safety.

Clarence House and the Ministry of Defence said yesterday there was official concern that the posting could pose an unacceptable risk to the Prince and those under his command. The same worries will arise when Prince William finishes at Sandhurst later this year.

When I was reading it, it was very different from what has been on the news. It Its an april 2006 aticle and that is no longer the case. Its on American news that he will be going to Iraq and serving starting in March. He will have comand of a small unit deploying to Basra.

Apparently he's expendable being third in line for the crown. But he will be accompanied by guards who probably will have the worse job of their lives trying to keep him from attracting bullets. The monarchy just got more expensive.

He's a good lad and if he takes a bullet for Granny at least he'll be able to face his comrades with honour.

Oh bollocks. There's no honour dying in a war zone. That's what we're always told, but it doesn't make it true. There is no honour or dignity or anything of that mushy stuff in dying so horribly.

And how convenient that the U.K. is pulling some of its troops out of Iraq and will eventually pull them all out by next year.

If only you can see my eyes rolling, it's much more cuter than a smilie.

The UK is pulling troops out of Iraq but they are sending troops to Afganistan: http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_2214745.html
However the duty is considerably less hazardous in Afganistan. So fewer UK troops killed = British people happier = British politicians safer in their offices.

Do you have figure? We seem to be getting casualities every week from Afghanistan... far fewer now from Iraq.

And Stealthy did you miss my English sarcasm?

I was talking about the honour felt between soliders. No, I don't think any innocent person getting killed is acceptable. British troops are withdrawing for tactical reasons; in other words, to make the situation better. Basra has always been handled better than Baghdad.

Really, we dont hear about them that much from casualtites coming from afghanistan. THe british are not taking that many casualities in Iraq. Most are happening in Baghdad and there arnt that many British stationed there.

Because Afghanistan is not a political issue, so the American media does not report on it much. They are expecting so really big battles there soon. They say when spring hits the Taliban are expected to step up attacks.

English sarcasm - never.
Where any sensitive international news is concerned it is best to get your information from several international sources. Everyone puts his or her own slant on it. If they really wanted to play it safe, they would send his unit to Kurdistan.

So do you think that's because there are no casualties or because the US media doesn't report them?
The numbers may not be huge but they are significant. 4 this year means 1 every other week. To say Afghanistan is considerably less hazardous is a matter of opinion... it's not where I'd like to be sending my son or daughter. How do you fancy it? Did you see the lastest on suicide bombers there?

Go here.

4 this year. In reality that really isnt that significant. Probably why it didnt make the news. Its pretty low.

I didn't know you English were capable. My mistake, it's just that that kind of talk is always heard here with no sarcasm but with loyalism. [is that a word?]
