According to a recently published poll britons have never had such a low opinion of the leadership of the United States. The poll found that only 12 per cent of brits trust them to act wisely on the global stage. They see America as a cruel, vulgar, arrogant society, riven by class and racism, crime-ridden, obsessed with money and led by an incompetent hypocrite.

So what does America do?

It is the date in 1605 when a Catholic conspiracy tried to blow up the house of parliament in London.

The reason that no one trusts America to act wisely on the world stage should be obvious to all.

Point is the brits don't really have the moral fiber to sneer at America.

As for the precipitous decline in British respect/esteem for the USA. Part of the cause has to be Blair's shamelessly poodling along with Bush II. Whether he's a fool or knave, his approach winds up people, with the current Lebanon debacle potentially being the final straw. Apart from the usual disparate grounds for dissatisfaction with his policy there's the pervasive feeling that it's just plain humiliating to have your prime minister acting like a tool. Neither Dubya nor Blair have come anywhere near doing right by the people they ought to be leading. However, there is a bigger picture. The underlying power structure, tilted toward war, dominated by industralists, rabidly authoritarian, and pathologically dishonestis. It's a machine that can keep on running long after the faceplate has been changed.

But enough of the us and them. The world we be a better place if we were all friends. As my friend Pink once said.

Yeah, I posted the Boy George story in the entertainment section a while ago. What a fantastic export he was.

Nice thought, but certain groups just want us all dead. England and the rest of Europe are finding that out.
