What's with all the tags and labels

I went shopping today, spent way more than I planned and bought a few new pairs of jeans. When I got home and started the tag removal process I found there was a sticker, and paper tags, all telling me much the same thing on every pair. Why so many tags? Surely one tag with the type and price is all anyone really needs to know?

And those little plastic tags that some are soft enough to rip off and others make you rip the label they were attached to. Ever leave part of those in a T-shirt or something and have it dig into your soft flesh? Nasty.
And what's the deal with men's dress shirts; all those pins and cardboard.
