Default Relationship baggage

Would you ever consider having a relationship with someone you knew had a lot of baggage. I don't mean the normal kind of thing that everyone has, broken hearts or a bad break up, but more serious kind of things in their past that are messing and could continue to mess with them for a while or for ever.

As an example, I was watching Dr Phil and he had a thing on schizophrenia. The husband of one of the women on the show had at times thought he was going to kill her and he'd had to take a knife from her because he thought she might harm herself. If you knew that kind of thing was there up front would you even bother or just walk away....or run even?

I don't know; can you make those kind of judgement calls when you're "in love"?

The only girlfriend I ever had was bi-polar.
Would I go that route again? You bet I would. I'm not the most cheerful thing on the planet. I want someone I can relate to.

Depends on what kind of baggage. Addicts and people with mental problems I would stay away from. If it was in your past and you've dealt with it, just don't tell me about it because it will make me feel weird. I'd rather be blind in a relationship than go on thinking the other person is going to break down and go back to their old bad habits.

Everyone's got baggage. Sometimes it's obvious and sometimes it isn't. If you're going to discount relationships based on baggage, then you're discounting yourself.

Maybe the real question is: If you knew then what you know now about your partner, would you still go with him/her?

You raise a good point solo1 but I think the original poster was refering to excess baggage beyond the norm.

What are you talking about? You have a wife and kids, that's way too much baggage.

Solo doesn't bother to read all the words in my posts. He likes to use his psychic powers to try and guess what I say instead.

I think everyone has the sort of baggage that everyone else would consider beyond the norm. Or, put another way, we each feel that our own baggage is affecting us less than the baggage of others affects them. Hmm. Now that I read that back, it really isn't any more simple than the first sentence.
