| Bloomin' crazy ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Norwegian national day is coming up (hah! Today! May 17th), so I just had to start a thread about them (being a true patriot and all ). I think I might have done this last year as well...Gah new board, new threads. When is your country's national holiday? Why is it set to that exact date (was there a spesific historic event that led to it?)? What do you do to celebrate the day? In Norway we celebrate May 17th because our constitution was signed on this very day in 1814. I think it's a very special day because we've been in unions with both Sweden and Denmark for so long. That's what got it started at least. What keeps it going is tradition I guess. Seeing as I am "russ" (should be anyway) this year it'll be a little special. I haven't taken part in any of the activities up until now (not too fond of the drinking and the fact that it all revolves around getting naked and having sex (sometimes in a tree, you'll get a condom in you hat or whatever). Preferably drinking while doing both), but I thought I'd join the parade. This is what wikipedia says about russ: "The graduating class from the Norwegian equivalent of high school - known as russ - has its own celebration on May 17, staying up all night and making the rounds through the community. The russ also have their own parades, in which they make parodies about various local and political aspects, although recently this has become less frequent." Other than this I'm working all day. Over-time pay, wohoo! |

| Canada Day, July 1st. Nobody does anything. Ottawa likes to stage things for TV, but if you actually go down to parliament you won't see it. We all love you, Jean Chretien. Paul Martin ain't got nothin' on you. But we all miss Brian Mulroney, because his chin can bring world peace. We just didn't give it a chance. |

Its a good thing those national days are named after there countries or we would probably take all them in to. St. Patrick’s is a day to go out drinking and partying. We dont get days off for it though, its not an official holiday. |

| We only "celebrate" St. Patrick's day because we like to copy the Americans. And Victoria Day is another one of those useless holidays. Though this year I'm grateful for it because it gives me an opportunity to go out and make my movie. Nobody forgets about Canada. They just choose not to care about us. And really, there is nothing to care about. |
