Tech support... please!

Can anyone help me with some basic tech help?

I have a couple of DVDs I've recorded that I want to transfer to my pc.
On my old pc it worked fine but I'm having no luck with my laptop.

Sure, if you can put up with my terrible tech speak (I'm sure I'm not going to get the right terminology!) I can play the discs in Windows Media, on my laptop but can't copy them. I just want to be able to put them on a file that I can either send or upload on youtube (which I've actually managed before!).

You have your terrible tech speak, I've got my terrible English speak. So this is going to be fun.

If you browse a standard DVD using Explorer (or "My PC", if you prefer it), you will find two folders:

AUDIO_TS
VIDEO_TS

AUDIO_TS use to be empty. Into the other one, among other files, you will find a lot of .VOB ones. Those are, basically, MPEG-2 encoded videos. So they can be played individually using Windows Media Player. And you should be allowed to copy them.

I don't know Youtube deeply, but I guess they should allow MPEG-2 files, which later they convert to that 320x240 crappy FLV format. If they don't, try to convert it before uploading. Software like SUPER may help you.

OK, getting there thanks! Saved the VOB files but I couldn't play them back on WMP and when I used Realplayer, there was no sound!
Any idea why that might be?

I guess sound codecs are AC3 (Dolby Digital), widely used on DVDs. If you download and install them ( http://ac3filter.net/ ), maybe Real Player could play those video files.

The weird point here is Windows Media Player. I've just booted Windows Vista on my laptop, loaded a DVD and opened a VOB file directly with Windows Media Player (11). After complaining about regions and all that annoying stuff, it has played fine. And I didn't remember installing any extra codecs on it. Odd.

The videos play perfectly on VLC... I'll try those codecs to see if it cures WMP.

When I was using Windows, I edited videos with Virtualdub. But it's unable to work with MPEG's: you must convert them to AVI.

I dont know of any that will edit VOB's, you can convert it with SUPER to an AVI.

Can youtube even upload a VOB?

Thanks Rory, I might not go the youtube route but could you give me a link to SUPER? Is it going to be easy to edit AVI files rather than VOBs? I only want to chop out some segments.

Anyway, good luck! SUPER is one of the trickiest programs to download. You have to go through a lot of "hidden" links to get it. It's like a videogame! :D

Cutting and joining AVI chunks is relatively easy.

4. Again at the botton, click on "Download SUPER © setup file" (navy link)

Well I dont know any program that edits VOB's. AVI's or WMV's arent hard to edit, could be time consuming though. It depends, editing a 5 min clip take only a few minutes. Editing the comercials out of a 2 1/2 hour TV recording takes much longer.
