GNU tar issues in Darwin

I guess this goes out to mced, our local comp wiz.

I'm using Tiger (10.4.11) so I'm using Darwin 8.11.

I'm attempting to install new versions of Apache/MySQL/PHP to my Apple laptop for practices of PHP & AJAX lessons.

Anyway, GNU tar is acting a bit weird. It's not doing its job. For example, I download the current PHP tar package

curl -O http://www.php.net/distributions/php-5.2.6.tar.gz

Then I try to decompress

gnutar -xzf php-5.2.6.tar.gz

But all it does is produces a folder named "php-5.2.6" but it's empty. I know I can use gzip but I was wondering why gnutar isn't working.

update:

I also tried

tar zxvf php-5.2.6.tar.gz

and it does the same thing. I put the "v" to see if it was really decompressing but I still end up with an empty folder.

It works fine with me. Try downloading it again, using another way (a browser?).

Aw, where's the fun in that?

I've been up for 12 hours trying to set up a server on my own using old fashion command line. It was a bust, mainly because there was problems with Tiger's apache installation, installing Apache2 and PHP5, now I know, is pointless.

I gave up, and I found MAMP. Son of a ... I wasted 12 hours when I could have gone GUI on it all.

Well, at least I enjoyed it, strangely enough.

That's something I thought after writting my answer: "why the hell is he trying to compile, when there should be precompiled packaged for MacOS?"

On Linux, there's only one program that I always compile from source: MPlayer. It worths the waste of time.
