Windows Vista

Now it looks pretty and sometimes even loads up but I gotta say, it is the worst operating system I have ever used.

New lap top, low end one. Why on Earth did they put something that takes up so much system resources on this.

1GB DDR RAM
1.86Ghz Celeron CPU
80 GB HDD...though 20 GB has vanished ??

Switching to a dual XP and Linux when I get back home. For now I gotta make do.

I bet your laptop's brand has included a bunch of stupid resident apps, like my Lenovo has got by default. It seems every new computer with Vista needs a deep msconfig clean.

Anyway, it takes too much time to boot.

Yep. Acer make.

Bundled with all kinds of garbage, the type that uses a lot of room on the HDD and RAM + CPU power to run.

A cute sidebar telling me that I'm running at Full power with Jack S' running. Options to add even more crap to the sidebar to show me things I can see looking at the system tray like battery power......and what happened to my spell checker!!!...and why sell a laptop with an 80GB drive and use a prog that will take up 20GB just for a back up??

I had less problems and restarts with Windows ME.

Can I use a legitimate copy of XP on a lap top and PC at the same time? It's not a copy that came bundled with the PC. Also can someone tell me a good version of Linux to go with?.....preferably with a GUI.

That's a really annoying habit in modern laptops. Instead of including a Windows CD/DVD like always has been, they make a hidden partition and use it as a recover/install system.

Of course you can, but I'm afraid it's not legal if you have got just one license :D

But it's said that Microsoft can change your Vista license by a XP one. Try it.

All Linux can have a GUI, if you like it.

K, ta for the info. I'll check out the starter versions of Linux and have a look at Microsofts web site to see about changing to XP.

Ok, So they are doing an exchange prog. For the US only and only for 3 months. It also costs $50 and a lot of time on the phone + you need to be a business to make the switch.

MS are forcing companies to put on Vista to new computers. Companies are putting their own Bloatware to in a way upgrade Home Basic.

XBOX 360 + Vista = double fail.

I believe they did a PR exercise, took people who had a bad perception of Vista sat them in front on a computer and had them use it. Named it something else and received a 90% positive review.

They did not however get to try to load numerous bits of software/network/etc and no doubt got to play on a high end gaming PC with 5 Terrabytes of RAM.

He's not talking about a XP upgrade. He has already a Vista license.

I don't think the point to an OS is to make it "look" like something else. The overall functionality is what counts. I would never let Vista near my computer, but then again, my comp is more than 5 years old, rendering it obsolete. I can't even handle a high capacity IDE drive!

Besides from the querky(sp?) things that's been happening lately with XP, from what I've read, Vista's super paranoid, and a huge headache. The only advantage I see to Vista is the higher RAM capacity. XP apparently only sees 4GB RAM as the limit, but I believe its really 3GB, and I'm a gamer, and I harbour a boat load of videos. I also use my PC as a media server for my apartment, in collaboration with along with my PS3.

If only linux would handle PhotoShop/Illustrator/ all designer tools, and handle games like Battlefield/COD4, etc., I would have dropped MS a long time ago.

My alternative is Apple, but I still don't know if Apple can handle games without using Bootcamp requiring windows.

mced, invent an OS for us.

That's because of the 32 bit x86 architecture. If you own a 64 bit micro, you will be able to avoid that 3/4 GB limit. There is 64 bit version in XP, Vista, MacOS and Linux.

I have an AMD 64, but if I were to switch to 64 bit XP, wouldn't that be a problem for PhotoShop as its a win32 bit programme? And some of the hardware don't have 64bit drivers. Or is that not an issue?

I've tried emulations, but my fantasy is to abandon Windows altogether. Running an emulation still requires the Windows installation inside the virtual machine. Perhaps within 10 years there will be a breakthrough, but I guess VM is the answer for today.

Just went to the Cedega site, and they certify that they support Battlefield, so awesome!

No problem with 32-bit Photoshop, it will run smoothly. But maybe it will be limited to 3-4 GBytes. I'm not 100% sure, you should ask for technical help on Photoshop sites.

And yes, all hardware should have 64-bit drivers. This is a major issue.
