| Cannot live without Love ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | First time I've heard about Mint, I'm getting old ![]() If you're new into this world, I guess you're not going to find big differences. According to Wikipedia, Mint is an Ubuntu based distro. Anyway, try both of them and then choose. I have (K)Ubuntu installed on my laptop and it's starting to do... weird things. |

| Mu nótahu ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ubuntu is the most friendly desktop Linux distro I've ever seen. The tools that are fairly well developed in Linux are the ones that most users actually use for productivity. Anyone with specific needs, like sound and video editing, shouldn't look for other platform for those. The average user that wants to check email and maybe do a school assignment shouldn't find Linux too confusing (so long as it's setup right). Here's a good articles on the differences with Mint: http://www.linux.com/articles/60538 Hope that helps Casey. PC or portátil.? Last edited by Captain Beefheart : 03-21-2008 at 02:44 AM. |

| Cannot live without Love ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks for the hints, Captain. I'm working with Linux since 2001, and now have installed Debian on my desktop PC and my file server. Because this laptop is pretty new, Debian stable was no suitable (too old packages), so I was going to install unstable when I thought "What about Ubuntu? Let's have a look". Weird things have started to happen when my desktop has died and I've been forced to work with this laptop more frecuently. IE, the console. It's hard to explain: it seems it's late for every command. When I make a directory called "foo", it succeeds, but tells me something like "impossible to make foo, it exists yet". When I do apt-getting, it often fails because it's occuped. I guess I'm gonna switch to Debian unstable. |

My girlfriend, who is only mildly better with computers than the average user, used KDE exclusively for a full 6 months. She preferred it over Windows. The only reason why she switched back is because her school and a website or two that she visited buy into the MS lock-in scheme. If we'd had a Mac and no install of Windows she would've just had to drop the online classes and not use certain websites that she wanted to. It's bad enough that I was forced to setup grub to go to Windows by default. ARGHH. Last edited by Captain Beefheart : 03-21-2008 at 04:50 AM. |

| Cannot live without Love ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | About your girlfriend's problem, try this: IES4Linux It seems those weird console issues have vanished. Reason? I had running three konsoles with a root account and they seemed to come into conflict between themselves. Why the hell do my system boots up and starts running root shells without my permission? I don't know. Funny thing. Good try, but I don't like Gnome ;) Just a matter of tastes. KDE on my laptop and desktop, Fluxbox on my file server. |
