Yesterday, GameStop COO Dan DeMatteo said that he believes Nintendo “intentionally dried up their supply because they made their numbers for the year” with the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo’s new fiscal year begins April 1. To those accusations, Harrison, Nintendo’s senior VP of marketing and corporate communications, said in a phone interview, “No, that’s not at all the case. We have worldwide territories that are all competing over the available production. The Japan and European markets are doing extremely well with the Wii. People in Japan at NCL [Nintendo Co. Ltd.] are making the best decisions that they can about which products get shipped to which market and when.” Harrison reiterated that Nintendo is working to ship whatever it can, trying to meet demand that results in quick sellouts of Wii hardware at retail. He said that the uncommonly strong post-holiday demand caught Nintendo by surprise. “GameStop’s an important customer,” Harrison said. “Every retailer would want to have more [Wiis]. I think [DeMatteo’s comments] may have been GameStop’s way of trying to request more.” today at work we were told that we were not going to receive any wii's this holiday season nor that many other major retailers like target, walmart, kmart, etc as well. this wasn't just in the local area i live, this is also everywhere in the united states. quite possibly over seas. seems the only place to find them will be online at the retailer's websites. we were told the reason for this was that nintendo was not going to be producing any wii's for the rest of the year and this news came from the head honchos. this news seems to go along with what gamestop is saying. some of the other employees who were there listening to this news looked shocked and it was because they had wanted to buy one for christmas and we're not getting any in. i'm also guessing they wanted the employee discount.
