Default 6 months jail

Marion Jones is going to jail for 6 months for her drug use and subsequent lies and cover up.

Good thing? Bad thing? Will it send a message to the other athletes who think winning through drugs is a risk worth taking?

Bad thing.

Why was she supposed to accuse herself anyway?
Basically she cheated and got caught. She was disqualified, is barred from further competitions, she's broke (according to Wikipedia) because of costs for defense.

She's gone to jail for lying to federal agents. It's unwise to lie to federal agents when that turns out to be a bigger crime then cheating in sport.

^ true dat. If it was a common joe/jane they'd get about 5+ years. She got a sweet deal cuz most likely she'll serve half that sentence in "good bahaviour'.

Her career may be over in sports, but she could probably milk some money out of it with a book. No matter what, celebs always get the star treatment.

She had to give back all the money she won in competition, too. I wouldn't be surprised if Wikipedia is right and she is broke.

She deserves to be.

Jones was also sentenced to two years' supervised release and 400 hours of community service.

6 months jail, 2 years supervised, 400 hours of community service, for a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 5 years jail doesn't sound like she's got a free ride at all.

She's not in jail for drugs, she's in jail for lying to a federal agent. 18USC1001 is a very broad reaching, we're going to make a point with this, type law.

I think anyone would prefer 2 years of supervised release than 2 or 5 years of lock up. You're conditioned to follow rules set by the officer of the court, but at least you're not in a 7ft. x 10ft. cell. F!uck yeah, it's a free ride.
