Lately the bowl games have been boring....we need to bring back the controversy that we had when there was a question as to who was number 1. The great problem with college football is every team plays the same type of game. There may be differences in talent, but the look of each teams offense is so similar. |

It's impossible in theory and practical application to really know who the best team when you consider most of the "powerhouses" never play head to head in the season, and most of them have weak schedules due to mythical rivalries that have lasted over 100 years. The BCS comes down to politics pretty much. And I know someone will say "Well how do you explain South Florida ranking so high". Cinderellas. People love underrated teams made up from leftout recruits. Take Notre Dame. They are consistenly overrated, probably the most overhyped program in history (see NBC contract to nationally televise every game.) Notre Dame plays 2 to 3 good teams a season and pads their schedule with weaklinks like Army, Navy, Air Force, Stanford, North Carolina etc. The official rules say that ND is guaranteed a BCS appearance if they're in the top 8. How is that fair? Michigan has a great football tradition too. They receive no such special treatment. They're not in a conference. Fine. How about "any independent that finishes in the top 8 gets an automatic appearance"? How about "no at-large team (or ND) should get in when there are other eligible at-large teams ranked ahead of them"? Wouldn't that be more fair? There's probably more money invested(from recruiting to national coverage). From a logistical standpoint March Madness makes sense, regional brackets up until the Sweet 16 and then the Final Four. But with basketball there isn't as much wear and tear as there is with football so it would be impossible to breeze so easily through a schedule bracket consisting of more than 10 teams(unless you give the first two a BYE) I would say that the title game today is the only one that's played out how it really should be. The other games put an underdog against a favorite with the thought that the game might be good but in the end the favorite will normally come out on top. This makes the BCS look good because it often doesn't disrupt the final rankings. |
