The best time for english was before johnson invented official spelling - different people made up their own spellings. Johnson had to kick every third lamp post and always avoided the gaps in the pavement. It's sad we make our kids to take after an obsessive compulsive. Johnson used to buy oysters for his cat |

We have too many languages and dialects in the world as it is with each faction of the opinion that their language is the language just like the various religious sects think that theirs is the only path to eternal salvation. |

| Me gustas tú... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Well I recently made some experience; on a different international message board (not Fanhost) I wrote 'travelling' and some American chick said that I wrote it wrong because I used two 'l' instead of one. Ha ha, I know that in American English they like to write particular things different compared to British English, but I think it was pretty funny that this woman told me I would be wrong. |

But the elizabethans made up their own spellings - and they wrote better literature than we do. Shakespeare has more beauty in his spelling, which could condense different meanings into the same word. Any sentence from the balcony scene shows it http://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/A...m/Q1/scene/2.2 eg "She speakes, but she sayes nothing... Her eye discourseth, I will answere it. " "Sayes" is like "says" but also suggests "say as", while the additional e is symmetical with the e in "speakes". "Answere it" is like "answer it", but also suggests " an swear it". "Discourseth" sounds better than "discourses" ect And he can create more phonetic transcriptions eg "Vnto the white vpturned woondring eyes''. "Woondring" tells you how he pronounced his vowels (not like gielgud who would say either "one-dring" or "one-der-ring") yes it would be a nightmare if people wrote their insurance forms like this. Wasn't Shakespeare writing in the literary style of his time? Furthermore, what small persentage of the populous could read during Shakespeare's time? I'm sure a lot more people could appreciate and understand his plays first hand if they could afford the price of admission. Nervertheless, I agree that Shakespeare's plays sound great when read aloud. We have a free Shakespeare festival in early summer here. They do one play for about two weeks in an outdoor setting each year. |

All we have of the plays are bootlegs. But the sonnets were published officially, and they have the same spellings http://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/A...Son/Q1/poem/82 Quote:
