In 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen discovered Helium while analyzing the chromosphere of the sun during a total solar eclipse in Guntur, India. Helium was the first element discovered on an extraterrestrial world before being discovered on Earth. His discovery, collaborated by Joseph Lockyer in October of the same year, was based upon the observation of a bright yellow line at a wavelength of 587.49 nM in the spectrum of the sun.
