I think allowing them to get nuclear bomb would be a bad idea.
This is how the government puts down a gentle protest by their own people about an election fraud which didn't even concern the main leaders, and involved candidates who had already been pre-selected by the clerics
Note also how suicidally khamenei deals with this relatively trivial issue. The election is rigged for 65% instead of something plausible like 51%. And then instead of just asking for re-count, and getting peacefully on with it, they start chanting "death to the uk"

Obama won't be able to charm them into being nice. He must be less naive. The protest will end soon. The regime will be v unstable. And this will only make them more unfriendly

Iran - nuclear weapons - very, very bad idea, second only to North Korea doing the same. It is one thing to have one country in a region with a big stick. It is something else to have two or more, although, thinking about it, India and Pakistan haven't annihilated each other yet.

Khamemei, et. al., have reason to fear these protests. If the clerics grant honest elections of hand-picked candidates, what next, anyone running for office? This could be the undoing of the Islamic Revolution! I would not be surprized if they (the clerics) clamp down hard on these protests today or tomorrow. As to Obama - he is a wimp on foreign policy. Don't expect anything decisive from him.

Obama was clever to stay out the way on this issue. Some of his decisions have been good. But the idea that you can make them give up their evil nuclear plans by being more friendly won't work.

The iranian government lacks basic common sense. Note their suicidal tendencies. The protestors start out complaining about a relatively trivial recount and somehow khamenei manages to blow up their demands into revolution. They didn't even want a revolution last week. Mousavi isn't particularly moderate, just slightly taller and less vulgar than ahmadinejad.

It is something else to have two or more, although, thinking about it, India and Pakistan haven't annihilated each other yet.

Iran has a per capita gdp of only $4000 and yet wastes billions on hezbollah, hamas and the iraqi insurgency. Hurting their ideological enemies is more important than any kind of self-interest. No wonder the iranian street gets angry.

India has a stable and sensible government. Pakistan is a sensible, but slightly unstable, government. But the pakistani bombs are under american guard anyway
