Thumbs down 16yr old Girl lured & beaten at friends' house

Police Evidence Footage obtained from the Public Press Conference in Polk County FL

Eight teenagers in Lakeland, FL invite Victoria Lindsay over and beat her up for things she allegedly said about them on the internet.

Lakeland, Florida - The Polk County Sheriff's office released the video of a teenage girl who, as Sheriff Grady Judd puts it, was "lured so her friends could beat her."

The video shows what Judd says is the second of five beatings the 16-year-old received from people she knew. The attackers say they were upset with so-called "trash talk" the victim posted on her MySpace page, and they say they wanted to post their own video of the beating on MySpace and YouTube.

The sheriff says the victim was first beaten unconscious in a bedroom. When she awoke, she was on a couch in the living room, where the screaming and beatings continued.

"It is disgusting that the attackers find it funny and want to post something on the Internet showing someone nearly beaten to death," says the victim's mother.

Sheriff Judd is calling it one of the most disturbing videos he has seen in a long time and he hopes all those arrested will be tried as adults. They face charges ranging from felony battery, false imprisonment to kidnapping. The sheriff says the attackers "were relentless."

Even though those involved could face prison time, Judd says the teens showed no remorse after their arrests.

"When they were in a holding cell, they were all laughing," Judd says. "One of the teens arrested, who is a cheerleader, asked, 'Does this mean I'm going to miss cheerleading practice tomorrow?' The others were cutting up and said, 'It looks like we won't be going to the beach this weekend.'"

While the attackers can laugh off the incident, the victim's mother certainly can't.

"You never think it will happen to your family," she says. "To have this happen and see it... is hard to bear."

NAMES OF THOSE ARRESTED ARE BELOW:

Zachary Ashley
April Cooper
Brittini Hardcastle
Kayla Hassell
Britney Mayes
Mercades Nichols
Cara Murphy
Stephen Schumaker

This whole thing seems very odd to me. After getting beat on she continues to try to argue and reason with the other girls. Why not make a run for the door, or a bathroom, or something? It's like she isn't even trying to escape or fight back, and barely defending herself.

Unsupervised teenagers can be prison-mentality savages, especially in groups. It's good that these eight girls all got arrested, but this shouldn't be some "what is our culture coming to?" moment for us. We've been here for a very long time. Worse happens week after week, month after month, year after year. Frequently it only starts to be considered newsworthy when the targets decide to take some people with them before killing themselves. Sad.

Fancy taking something said on the internet that seriously. Everyone knows you can say whatever you like about people, all the stuff you wouldn't dream of saying to their face.
What I love is that one of them was stupid enough to film he incident.
I couldn't watch more than 5 seconds of that.

One sided beatdowns are of course gross things, but the main thing that seems to make this stand out is that they were little baby-tee white gurls and there was a video camera.

She wanted to talk it out with them & plus there were 2 boys outside the front door to keep her from leaving the house.

It looked like most of those girls were just there to see some catfighting. The cameraperson was clearly getting some pseudo sexual rush out of the whole sordid business.

Those girls are not going to be successful anyway you cut it. They are redneck middle managers and f!uckups.

Are they gonna charge them as adults? I guess what this comes down to is the purpose of the juvenile justice system. Does the punishment exist more to rehabilitate the attackers or prevent others from acting in a similar fashion? The best thing for the girls might be counseling and some strict parenting, but how would that prevent other people from taking similar actions? I don't want these girls to be martyrs either, but in a way everyone who goes through the system is some sort of martyr because they serve as an example to others that their actions have consequences.

This is a chance to see what it takes to make everyone's inner republican come out. There's something twisted in our curent ideas about maintaining order, instilling humanity, and what justice is about.

Congratulations tho, you are the winner of Godwin's Prize!! By bringing Dubya into this conversation about juvenile justice, you have effectively marked the point at which all reasonable debate is officially done! Your prize is you get to choose the new direction the thread will go in from here out. Be creative. Pick polar bears.

I'm Beefheart, in it for crappadoo's sake. That means it's advanced. I've been to the distant-times as they bled again into the past and know that truths and futuretalk are that jerk the Demiurge's way of distracting you from knowing and cultivating the minutely hewn panoply of the present allsubstance.

Forget about it all and sleep the sleep of the milksop. This was over before it began.
