1649 – The Peace of Rueil was signed, signaling an end to the opening episodes of the Fronde, France's civil war, after little blood had been shed.
1801 – Russian Emperor Paul I of Russia was assassinated in his bedroom by a band of dismissed officers, leading the way for his son Alexander I to accede the throne.
1847 - Johnny Appleseed, American pioneer agronomist died. (b. 1774)
1851 - The first performance of Rigoletto, written by Verdi.
1917 – World War I: British forces led by Sir Stanley Maude captured Baghdad, the southern capital of the Ottoman Empire.
1955 - Alexander Fleming, Scottish scientist, Nobel laureate died. (b. 1881) (A Scottish biologist and pharmacologist. Fleming published many articles on bacteriology, immunology, and chemotherapy. His best-known achievements are the discovery of the enzyme lysozyme in 1922 and discovery of the antibiotic substance penicillin from the fungus Penicillium notatum in 1928, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Florey and Chain.)
