1864 - American Civil War: Sherman's March to the Sea - Major General William T. Sherman's Union Army troops reach Savannah, Georgia.
1868 – The first traffic lights were installed outside the Houses of Parliament in London, resembling railway signals with semaphore arms and red and green gas lamps for night use.
1896 - Alfred Nobel, Swedish inventor and founder of the Nobel Prize died. (b. 1833)

He set aside the bulk of his estate for the prize. I guess it took a while to build up interest.
