Default Tools

There's not a lot of things that break down around the place that we need tools, but recently I had to borrow my neighbour's tools to remove my car battery. And today I wanted to take apart my fan so I can clean it. I had a phillip's screwdriver but not the right hex key size. I got a bit frustrated and I stopped rather than throwing a fit over not having the necessary tools.

So, guys, help out a brotha. What are the essential tools to have in the home for home and car use?

So far I have in mind to buy:
  • Screwdriver set
  • Hex Key set
  • Wrench set

And I know that their are different types of metals, too. Which are better?

I have a couple of different sized shifters rather than a wrench set.
I think screw driver sets are a waste of money unless you are really planning on doing a lot of stuff. Many of them you'll probably never use. A small and medium flat head and philips head will probably be all you need, one of those stubby flat heads can also be useful.
Hex key set is good.
Sockets and ratchet are also useful, a set of these is good because the sizing isn't flexible.
A pair of pliers is a must

The garage is jammed full of tools, nothing to do with me. But in the kitchen I find it useful to have a small range of screw drivers and some pliers.

Wrench set is good. As for screwdrivers, just get a 5 or 6 piece magnetic screwdriver set. One screwdriver, and the bits are stored in the handle. I have one. Works great.

Pliers (a Craftsman 4-piece is good for you)
Rubber hammer
Hammer
Measuring tape
Level
Socket wrench set (Craftsman)

That should do you. I don't know what you're thinking on prices, so the size of some of the sets is up to you.

I have two leatherman multipurpose tools. I use them for nearly everything since it's convenient, everything is in the one place. It depends a lot on what you are planning on doing, but if it's just fix up things, you don't need a lot of tools.

Electric drill
Various Allen Keys (I think that's what we Brits call your Hex keys?)
One of those retractable measuring tape things - great for teasing the cat.

Just don't be that guy that buys the expensive Makita combo set from Home Depot only to store it way in three months with basically no use.

Just don't.

And for house repairs and small tasks, multi-screwdrivers:

Fixing electronics, sometimes loose hinges, fixing a cabinet, loose drawers, opening fans to clean them, leaky faucets, etc.

I think with the loose hinges - you need to tighten them.

I haven't fixed one thing in my life. I've taken apart my fan to clean it out, but it didn't require any tools. Taking out a car battery is what I've seen someone do, I think he used some type of wrench I believe to take off the connectors and then he just took the battery out. It looked pretty easy to do from my observation...
