Lawyers Give Irrelevant Information

Two women are on a transcontinental balloon voyage. Their craft is engulfed in fog, their compass gone awry. Afraid of landing in the ocean, they drift for days. Suddenly, the clouds part to show a sunlit meadow below. As they descend, they see a man walking his dog.

One of the flyers yells to the figure far below, "Where are we?"

The man yells back, "About a half mile from town."

Once again, the balloonists are engulfed in the mist. One flyer says to the other, "He must have been a lawyer."

The other says, "A lawyer! How do you know that?"

The first says, "That?s easy. The information he gave us was accurate, concise, and entirely irrelevant."

I know a variant of that joke, I think is slightly better.

baloonist: Excuse me. I promised to meet with my friend half an hour ago, but I got lost in this fog. Do you know where I am?

guy on ground: You're in a baloon. Your position is between 50° and 51° degrees North and 1° to 2° degrees East. (It's so foggy, as it's in the UK)

baloonist: You must be an engineer.

guy on ground: Yes, how did you know?

baloonist: It's easy. Everything you told me is correct from a technical standpoint, but it's useless information and I still don't know where I am.

guy on ground after a pause: And you must be a manager.

baloonist: Right, how did you know?

guy on ground: It's easy. You don't know where you're at. You gave a promise, you didn't know if you could keep it and expect others to solve this problem for you. Fact is, that you're at the exact same position now, as you've been before we met. But now everything is somehow my fault.

I seem to remember hearing it in that form also.

^I'm not sure I've heard that exact one before actually, I have heard a couple of political variations though.
