Default Automatic or manual transmission

What do you prefer???

Personally, I think that the automatic transmissions are for the old ones. There's nothing better and delicious in changing the gears of a sport car through the manual transmission.

I also prefer manual transmission.

I like to decide the gear by myself. Automatics tend to need more fuel because of the torque converter clutch. Although I the mechanics in an automatic transmission is more impressive than in manual transmission.

A stick is more fun to drive but an automatic is good for convenience, like while on the phone, and better in traffic.

depends on the car... I own both and some times I wish the automatic in my car was a stick and stuck in traffic I grow to hate that my truck is a manual..

Autos are almost always going to be faster in modern cars being like it or not a monkey can smash the gas and down the same numbers over and over.. Sure, a pro race car driver can rip off a perfect run in some manuals and beat the stick drive but get real, odds are that's "not you"

that being said if/when I buy another sports car I'd get a manual just for the fun of shifting gear.. but if I was buying a normal car for around town or a truck/jeep I'd want an auto..

IMO there is not much point to have an manual in anything other then a really hot sports car.. Being with out the speed and handling etc it's all the work, none of the pay off.

With an automatic, people must be more prone to fall asleep on the wheel.

Question: Those of you, who only have a licence for cars with automatic transmission, which foot do you use to break? Did they tell in driving school to use the right one for both, gas and brake, or use one foot for each pedal?

On driving test you will fail if you use 2 feet on automatic. You use the right one for both.

I dont think any state in US has a different license for automatic and maual. Once you have a licence you can drive both. Some trucks, busses, and industrial vehicles require a different licence.

Some people who don't succeed getting the normal license (for example because of disabilities) do the one for automatic cars only.

I only have a license for cars up to 3.5 t weight (loaded). If I was one year older, I could have made the license before the law change enforced by the EU I'd be allowed to drive trucks up to 7.5 t (loaded) as well.

There is no different licenese even for that. People who cant drive manual just dont drive one. The test for a general License is only given on an automatic anyway and that license lets you drive a manual.

My license says: General Class E License. Can drive motercycle, water craft, non-commercial vehicle less than GVWR of 26,001 lbs (weight of 13 tons; includes weight of people, cargo, and anything its towing), cant drive more then 8 passengers. Holding this licence constitutes consent to any sobriety test or ID scan.

Automatic transmission for traveling in the city, but manual transmission for those curved and hilly roads. :]

I always think it's a strange question; it's like asking if a woman wants "a natural child birth" or all the help of modern pain relief. The natural/manual people can argue that to use pain relief/auto isn't getting the whole experience but I'm all for modern advances in technology. And new developments in transmission (like in my Audi) means an auto is as good as any regular driver.

Not the way I drive!

I'm with you there. What's so great about changing gear manually in a boring car?

Yes, I'm sure that's right but not the other way round.

Thats the kind of thing we dont have here. I took my test when I was 16 on an automatic. But I have driven a manual a lot.

Default Manual or Auto

Has anyone really paid attention to the new breed of F1 an most other cars except for NASCAR. They have a clutch but after that, it's all automatic. You don't see a stick and if you do, you don't have to depress the pedal anymore. F1 and formula cars are all electronically shifted. Pro Stock either uses electronic or four levers and you can't down shift them for compression. For the sake of fun driving, I do like having a stick but, for everyday use in traffic, give me an auto anyday.

That's right. The clutch is only used for accerating from the standing. The clutch weighs less than 1 kg but is more expensive than 1 kg of gold. Atop of that, it doens't even have a reasonable lifespan.

Automatic wouldn't be a choice for me, because of the higher gas consumption compared to a car with the same power and weight but with stick shift.
