| Exciting Opera News As if the satellite broadcast of nine operas from the Metropolitan Opera in New York to hundreds of venues in 35 countries was not enough, the Met has begun a streaming video and audio service. There are currently almost 200 titles to choose from in high and standard definition. Costs range from $3.99 (SD)/$4.99 (HD) for a single rental to $149.99 for an annual subscription. The 2009-2010 Met season will feature eight new productions, four of which are company premiers. Rolando Villazon (as Hoffman) and Anna Netrebko (as Antonia) will star in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffman, conducted by James Levine. Angela Gheorghiu (as Carmen) and Roberto Alagna (as Don Jose) will star in Bizet’s Carmen. Renee Fleming (as Armida) is featured in Rossini’s Armida and Natalie Dessay (as Ophelie) in Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet.
