One feature that makes the plant so popular is that it can survive during cold temperatures (as low as 7 °C/45 °F). Orchid hobbyists in temperate climates appreciate their ability to bloom in winter, when few other orchids are blooming. Only a few Cymbidium species are commonly grown in nurseries, due to the popularity of hybrids. |

One could only grow them if one had a greenhouse. The MBG has a fantastic orchid show every year. I posted photos from this year's show here. The photo posted in this thread was featured on Wikipedia today. |

Fixr is correct, they would freeeeeze in his area. They need a very specific climate or else they'll: Die if its too cold Never flower if its too hot consistantly They are easy compared to some of the touchy buggers out there, however that only applies if you live where they like it. Then you can boot them out the back, water them when you can be f*cked and fertilize while you're doing it. For a pretty, easy choice that can be kept as a mildly high maintanence houseplant, try a good phally. You can pick them up anywhere, they're cheap, reasonably easy and will get you started in the intoxicating world of orchids. WARNING: Orchids are a very real and serious threat. Orchid addiction virus has been know to cost thousands of dollars, the loss of jobs, tear families apart and make wives lie and cheat on husbands. It can cut down anyone, even young people with great jobs in their prime. Please, buy orchids responsibly, and only if you can afford to sustain the inevitable 65+ you'll buy if that bloody phal reblooms for you. YOu may laugh now, but I've seen it happen a hundred times. Also, make sure that you give me divisions if this happens to you. I WANT MORE DAMN IT, MOOOORRRREEEEE!!!!!!! And why you buggers wait till I'm gone to talk about the pretties??? I abandon you for a flower board, then I get back to find this! At the moment I've got a rose in bloom and two in bud, numerous orchids flowering and in bud(none of the cyms, sadly) and a host of other stuff sprouting up the goods that I just don't care about that much. Good eye, Jo. This, the "onion" globes in the main pool in front of the Climatron, the sunset herons in the Climatron, and the chandelier in the Ridgeway center were bought with donations following the Dale Chihuly exhibit in 2006. It was one of the most suscessful exhibits in the history of the garden with 950,000 visitors. We have some Chihuly shells in the "shell" lobby of the McDonnell Sciences building on the medical school campus. | |
