Shaw was not the only one to make it big in the US during the 19th century and he was not the only one to practice philanthropy. Andrew Carnegie (US Steel) born in Dunfermline, Fife, UK endowed half the libraries in the country. On the other side of the coin were the "robber barons" like John D. Rockfeller of Standard Oil fame and Cornelius Vanderbilt (railroads). The nineteenth century was one of rapid expansion of the country westward - Jefferson's purchase of vast tracks from France, the Louisana Purchase of 1804, opened almost half the country west of the Mississippi to homesteaders. The California gold rush of 1848-1855 added to the land frenzy. |

Don't blame us for Rockfeller and Vanderbilt, both born in New York (apparently)! | |

Then one of my sisters joined me and we toured southern Germany, northern Switzerland and northern Austria. In all we (I) was there for three weeks - far too short of a time to absorb the local cultures and taste the local brews. If I had the time and funds, I'd spend a year or more. Maybe some day... |

My idea was to just spend a weekend finding the tiny village in southern German that my ancestors came from. The rest was my sister's doing. If I found the village, I had planned to shout my last name in the town square. If hordes of peasants started chasing me with pitchforks, I would know why my ancestors left. If, on the other hand, they threw a big festival and crowned me prince, I might have stayed. As it turned out, we pulled over to the side of the road at the entrance to the village so we could take our picture in front of the sign identifying the village. A woman in a nearby house opened her window and started to yell at us in a most inhospitable German tongue so we departed post haste and headed toward Zurich. After two tries to find Zurich, I reached the conclusion that my sister could not read a map and started navigating by dead reckoning. But that's another story. |

The plant identifier is also great, I looked up several of the Magnolia's (many pictures are missing). I searched & found, that there are approx. 50 varieties of Dogwoods, as well. I will have to do more research, & see if I can correctly identify this tree. Last edited by Camino; 04-13-2009 at 04:16 PM.. |
