Haeckel was a zoologist, an accomplished artist and illustrator, and later a professor of comparative anatomy. Haeckel's entire literary output was extensive, working as a professor at the University of Jena for 47 years, and even at the time of the celebration of his 60th birthday at Jena in 1894, Haeckel had produced 42 works with nearly 13,000 pages, besides numerous scientific memoirs and illustrations. The subsequent illustrations are from his work Kunstformen der Natur (1904) - Artforms of Nature, with plates representing detailed marine animal forms. Proteus - An animated documentary film on the life and work of Ernst Haeckel has just been released. References: Ernst_Haeckel and Kunstformen der Natur |

Usually there's not much to add. Or maybe in this case, that Haeckel is a little controversial, because of some statements he did about people with disabilities. ...I feel bad for spoiling this. The illustrations are really nice. Last edited by Samson The Cat; 09-17-2008 at 03:55 PM.. |

I think the man's artwork can be appreciated independent of any of his erroneous ideas. |

On the issue of does a man's beliefs counter his talent. I'd say Wagner's genius withstands his odious beliefs. Last edited by Jocasta; 09-18-2008 at 04:21 AM.. | |

Anyway, I enjoy the music and operas of Wagner even though he was a bigot and cad. Likewise I appreciate the painstaking detail in the drawings of Haeckel in spite of his sociological views. Nobody is perfect. |
