I'm not sure if the live arts is part of this forum as well, but I was cleaning up and came across the program for the first show I ever worked on
Sunday in the Park with George by Steven Sondheim. He's best known possibly for Sweeney Todd, but he's written a lot of stuff and it's often very different from the traditional musicals, often a bit dark and thinking.
Anyway, Sunday in the Park, was inspired by the painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat, interesting in itself since it's all dots put together to make the painting.
The musical looks at the various characters in the painting and tells a bit of a story about why they are in the park and what took them there.
