Default To ditch or not to ditch - that is the question.

Sooo...do you have any chapter or page limit to when to ditch a book you don't like? Are you determined to finish regardless of how it is?

I'm a determined to finish girl. I read to get into someone else's head, so no matter how much it shlts me, unless its disturbing, I'll keep going.

I am so easily distracted I can ditch a book at any time... only when I'm on holiday can I guarantee to finish a book.

My time is valuble to me; if it isn't as interesting as I had assumed, its trashed.

^I agree, and I also go along with the "too many books" philosophy. I usually have a bunch checked out with the clock ticking so if I'm not engaged or its cr@p - out it goes.

This does come back to bit me sometimes, namely with Atonement by Ian McClellan and Black Swan Green by David Mitchell.

Ah, see I tend to own anything I read. I've got a real "thing" about it. If I don't own it, I don't read it.

I used to be that way until the amount of books I wanted to read surpassed the amount I could logically afford and purchase. Also, I'm very partial to my county's online library system. If I hear about or see a book I want, I go there, log in, and request it. It goes into my hold queue and then they email me to pick it up when it arrives. It sorta satisfies my instant gratification tic.

BUT - make no bones, there is nothing, I repeat NOTHING more wonderful than spending a few hours at a bookstore and leaving with some brand spanking new books. I prefer paperbacks.

^ Hear, hear!

I do think supporting the library is fabulous. Its just that I've got my "thing". And I suppose for me its not too hard to indulge because I know all the discount book haunts, and I'd rather just pick something up and give it a red hot go without knowing what it is. It keeps your mind elastic.

I totally understand, I used to rarely use the library until a couple of years ago.

It’s more the anticipation than the consummation. It’s like anticipating the first taste of a luscious dessert or the first sip of a fine wine. Sometimes it goes down so smoothly, other times there is an unpleasant aftertaste.

Oh definitely, there's nothing like a crisp, new paperback, they fit so snuggly in your hand. That's one reason I hate reading on the computer, you don't get that comforting physical feeling.

^ Absolutely. And you can't play with the pages and smell the history of the book, either.

It really depends on the writer and the quality of his work. Sometimes I feel I "owe" it to the writer to stretch the line as much as I can before giving up.

Palahniuk is an example. I used to read him religiously. Fight Club, Survivor, Invisible Monters, and Choke all rank right up there for me. He really lost me after that with Diary and Lullaby. He really lost something between Choke and Lullaby. It had no edge to it, no real mystery, no reason for me to care about any of the characters.

The only book I never finished that I started was The Dogs of War by Frederick Forsyth.
